Publisher Ubisoft and developer Red Storm Entertainment have announced The Division: Heartland, a standalone free-to-play game in a new setting within The Divisionuniverse. It will launch for consoles, PC, and the cloud in 2021 or 2022. Specific consoles were not announced. Users can apply to participate in its early test phases here.

Additionally, a new The Division game is in development for mobile platforms. More information on that project will be announced at a later date.

Strange.

Loved the Division 1 from launch to the final months before the sequel. D2 was a massive letdown. I think by focusing on "endgame first," they failed to make a compelling setting up front, which is a large part of what kept me coming back year after year. The missions and MMO trinity of tank-heal-dps felt a lot better in D1 and I hope they can get back to some of that for Heartland. But for a B-team to be taking over, I'm not optimistic. I'll play it for what it is, but D1 is still the game I'm most looking forward to revisiting whenever i upgrade to a 4K display.
