What games do you love despite the very obvious issues with them?

A good example would be a game like Xenogears. The game is practically unfinished in it's final act, and it starts telling you its story instead of letting you play it. I love the game anyway for its characters, style, story(most of it) and gameplay.

Resident Evil 6 also comes to mind. The game's story, scenario and bosses leave much to be desired, but it has such a great control scheme, fantastic mercenaries mode, and is great fun in co-op. So much so I can completely forget how dumb and lacking it is in other regards.

Overwatch. I fucking hate this game, but at the same time I can't deny there is fun to be had here. I got many good years out of this game just playing casually with friends. There's still some good stuff in there now, but between botched launch of OW2, the inferiority of 5v5, and the forced DEI there's no denying this game is kind of shit at this point. It's mostly just a skin shop at this point, the PVE was totally botched and abandoned, and there's no concrete plan for the game.

Tenchu. I know they have their problems but I simply love these games. Too often, game designers think AI has to be smart -- it doesn't. In fact, quite the opposite. Playing as a stealthy mofo wiping out fools is part of that ninja fantasy we've all had since we were kids, and a truly intelligent AI would kill that. The dumb fucking enemies are one of the best parts of Tenchu.

Nioh games.

Story shit. Visually bad. Lacking level design. A ton of repetition. Bland art. Low enemy variety.

But oh boi does the combat kick ass. I played these games so much.

Fire Warrior. A 2/10 FPS game. Terrible controls, shitty soundscape, disgusting graphics, low quality cinematics, bad combat. Literally one of the worst games ever made.

But it nails the atmosphere of Warhammer 40k like no other game. To this day it really feels like the most authentic W40k game.

Fallout New Vegas (pretty much all Fallout games from Bethesda, except for 76 never played it)
Days Gone
State of Decay 2
Helldivers 2
All Metroid games past Super Metroid (yeah, they haven't ever captured the glory of that one, Zero Mission not included)

Final Fantasy 13 is hated by a good chunk of the fanbase, and you can make good arguments as to why. However, it has the best combat system in the whole series.

Lollipop Chainsaw pisses me off every time I play it due to its really clunky combat, but it's still one of my favorite games of all time because there's nothing else out there quite like it. SPARKLE HUNTING!!!!!!!!

Alice Madness Returns - I like the combat and the crazy take on Alice in Wonderland has always appealed to me.

Tecmo Deception series - They are kind of hard to get into, the graphics are usually not great, and I am still waiting for a game in this series that fully realizes the potential of its concept, but I love what these games are trying to do and no other games play like them. I wish Deception IV and its Nightmare Princess remix would get released on Switch or Switch 2 and get off those damn Playstation platforms already.

Dynasty Warriors and other musou games - The more I play the more modern ones, the more I find myself hating them. They have cheap enemies on higher difficulties, no enemy variety, a fucking useless army that never does anything to help you, worthless allies who CONSTANTLY need you to save them, and pretty mindless gameplay. However, there is so much potential for greatness if the games got handed off to developers who actually gave a fuck instead of those cunts at Omega Force.

Beat 'em ups taking place on a big massive battlefield. There is so much you could do with tactics, strategy, a variety of different enemy types, an army that actually pulls their weight, a morale system that actually fucking matters, and massive battles reminiscent of the Battle of the Bastards from Game of Thrones. Dynasty Warriors could be the greatest games in the beat 'em up genre if anyone other than Omega Force was designing them. You could see some of the potential of the series in earlier games like Dynasty Warriors 3, but Omega Force got lazy once they started making money. The newer games feel uninspired and half assed. Some of the things that were great about the older games got abandoned (like morale actually affecting gameplay and your army actually being useful), and over time the games just became about you slaughtering everything mindlessly and pretty much nothing else.

I would call BOTW and TOTK flawed, but still incredible games. So those two are added to the list. Same for Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, I'll put those three down as well

Robot Alchemic Drive

I clicked with the game like people who love Dark souls.

The crazy perspective and how massive and lumbering the mechs felt is something that I haven't experienced since, and this was PS2!

So damn ahead of its time. The Crysis before Crysis.

The sad thing is none of the ideas were bad, they were just attempted a few years too early. Technology was the limiting factor.

Had the game been made on the CryEngine even as early as Far Cry 1 in 2004, let alone Crysis, it would've been an amazing game.

As for my flawed game I love: Legendary

Game had a budget of $5 and a Wal-Mart gift card, but I give all that a pass because I can shoot a werewolf in the face with a Desert Eagle. I wish more games had this "mythical creatures and fantasy meets modern weapons" premise.

It really was. It's a game that actually deserves and would benefit from a re-make.

I actually worked with a designer (Chris Cross… yes that is his name) back in the day and he told me so much about working on the game and it was wild. Made me wish they had gotten a chance to do a sequel.

Yeah, of all the games that should get remade, Jurassic Park Trespasser is at the top of my list. It's not worth remaking games that are already good, it's worth remaking games that didn't hit their potential due to limitations at the time.

Jurassic Park Trespasser is that game. As I said, if it was made in 2004 instead of 1998, it would've been an instant classic.

Condemed 2, fantastic atmosphere let down by a weak ending and not the best fighting mechanics. But overall, I really enjoyed it. Picked it out of a 10 euro bin in 'Game' (remember that shop) and said, fuck i'll give it a shot. There is one level which gave me palpitations, anyone who played it will know!

Final Fantasy XV. It's jank as hell and an unfinished mess especially towards the end, but so is Xenogears. The road trip with the boys vibe is rather enjoyable.

Binary Domain is probably the most 7/10 game I have ever played. I love it.

I also hold a special place in my heart for Devil's Third and Wanted: Dead both very much flawed but both have some charm to the jank, either with good ideas, unique mechanics or ridiculous stories.

Devil's Third multiplayer was actually good and the base game is over-hated.

Oh hell yeah man. I loved FF XV, such an awesome game for the first half. Played the improved PC version and had a total blast, the open world was so good. Great running around animation as well.

Second half sucked baaaaaaawllz though. Total mess.

Best game in the Breath of Fire series is Dragon Quarter. Admittedly flawed, but the amazing music, the replayability due to the start over system, the cell shaded graphics that don't age poorly like other games. Such a good RPG that a lot of people hate
