Remember print gaming magazines? Although there are a handful that are still active and enjoyed by enthusiasts to this day, it's safe to say that the medium is a shadow of its former self, with the rise of the internet making countless print outlets all but obselete.

Still, what's great about the internet is you can find a ruddy boatload of print magazines that have been uploaded and archived over the years, just waiting for your eager eyes to scroll over their glorious pages. One such example is Nintendo Power, a dedicated gaming magazine from Nintendo of America (and later Future US) that ran from 1988 to 2012. Thanks to a group of talented archivists working on a project known as 'Retromags', all 285 issues are now available to download on Archive.org.
Coming in at just over 40GB for the lot, the files are unofficially available in .cbr format, showcasing everything from Nintendo's pioneering NES era to the dawn of the shortlived Wii U. You can download each issue individually, if you wish, but fair warning, it seems the site is getting a bit hammered at the moment, so you might be in for some long waits.

Of course, the question on everybody's lips, including our own, is how long this will be available before Nintendo itself inevitably takes it down? It's not exactly known for welcoming such projects with open arms, but hopefully even Nintendo will realise how important the preservation of gaming magazines is. Fingers crossed.

Best one was Link's Awakening cover. Then they went cheap and had the stapler issues.

Fantastic work! This is so cool!

@AJUMP23 I think the archive site is getting too much traffic or something. I also tried a few times to download it and it was stalling, only for it to eventually get to the download prompt after waiting a bit. When you get it you'll also need a comic book reader, I just got a free one on the mac store. The 1st one looks nice. Its about 60 MB each.

You can use the torrent too.

I wonder how these compare to retromags scans, which are the best. archive.org usually had pretty bad scans.

Was a monthly subscriber for about six years and those were good issues. Like late 2000 to about the time the Wii came out I was an avid reader of Nintendo Power
The magazine really went downhill in 2001. For a year or two they wouldn't cover M rated games, and changed their rating system to stars so every Nintendo game was 5/5.

I was trying to get the Torrent to work but could not.

I do not use a MAC and I never will, unless you count the iphone as a mac mini.

I personally have about a hundred NP in a box in my upstairs area.

Here is a photo of the box.

Finally got the download to work, says it will take 4 days. LOL Guess I need to upgrade my 28.8k modem to 56k so I can read them this weekend.

This is great. I was a subscriber from 1989 until about 1998 and the early issues (SMB3!) were an absolute joy to receive in the mail. Best advertising method ever.

And EGM too? That was the other mag (EGM2 for a while too.) that I would buy and literally absorb.

Download failed. Had to download torrent software.

- Windows blocks the installation of uTorrent, qBittorrent worked
- Internet Archive now requires me to log in whereas this morning it did not

I wonder if Nintendo is trying to pull this down and I wish Windows wasn't trying to be my nanny.

Download finished, files don't open in CBR Reader. Has anyone else actually been able to read these files?

I have been able to read the files. I just downloaded the first one and it talks about SMB 2 and Legend of Zelda 2. It does ask to login this time though, I don't know what thats about. I hope its not a honeypot or something.

I just deleted the whole thing, the torrent downloader, the files themselves and the CBR reader. Fuck it, it's not worth the effort.
