Looks like Electronic Arts will be the next tech company to tighten their belts.

Electronic Arts today announced that it will be laying off approximately 6% of its staff as part of a restructuring plan that also includes optimizing its real estate portfolio and re-focusing its efforts around growth opportunities.

EA's last annual report said it employed 12,900 people globally as of the end of March 2022, when a 6% cut would have put the total number of layoffs around 775.

EA has already made some cuts, with more than 200 QA staff (including external contractors) reportedly let go last month from the Baton Rouge, Louisiana office that had been supporting Apex Legends.

The article doesnt say exactly where the cuts are coming. But I do know from an effected friend that they are shutting down Capital Games in Sacramento. That studio focused on mobile development.

Hope all of those affected will find new work asap. Can't say much of anything from EA that has excited me over the years.

Honestly no, if they're in terrible HR positions and are actively ruining companies, I hope they go get help and find work that actually takes skill

Edit: see others already brought this up, keep political trash out of companies

Given that the article mentions recent layoffs in QA departments I don't think we can count on HR, PR and Social Media teams taking the brunt of the layoffs. It's going to be more critical roles like QA...cause you know when give the opportunity to fuck up, EA never fails to deliver.

Also the blue hairs are in HR, they're the ones who decide who to fire.

Your move, Sony.

I'm sure that was sarcasm but felt like pointing out that Sony is worth ~$90B and EA is ~$32B… so as wild as it would be, it's not happening.

I think the Sony pocketbooks should be looking at things like Ubisoft (if they want acquisitions) cuz it's SUPER cheap right now (~$5B)

Ubisoft would be interesting.

Aside from tent poles like Assassin's Creed, Sony would get Division, Rainbow Six, Far Cry.

They would be wise to look at potential remasters/remakes and new entries for Killzone IP, Reaistance Fall of Man IP, and Socom. In addition bringing in Ubsoft would let them look at potential Division 3, Far Cry 7.

They want more superhero stuff? A new infamous and remasters of 1/2 would be nice.

I dream of a Prince of Persia ala Sands of Time/2008 but with the insane production quality of God of War 2018.
