With the 40th anniversary of the original Dragon Ball manga next year, Toei Animation has announced a new anime series called Dragon Ball Daima that will have heavy involvement from the series' creator, Akira Toriyama. The latest teaser trailer for the new Daima anime series (shown below) reveals younger versions of the characters. However, this is meant as an all new story, rather than as a re-animated version of the first Dragon Ball anime. The interesting thing here is that Akira Toriyama is more involved in this new anime series than he has ever been before. This is obviously noteworthy, if only because it goes back to something that Toriyama's former editor Kazuhiko Torishima said when I interviewed him. One of the issues that Toriyama faced in the original Dragon Ball manga was that as young Goku increased in strength, it was harder to make the fights against larger and older opponents flow correctly. This was later exacerbated in the anime adaptation, which Torishima thought failed to capture the action of the manga. So the return of younger protagonists again could only really work if someone such as Toriyama had a firm grip on the wheel of the production, which it seems that he does. Released next year, Dragon Ball Daima has a lot to live up to, but after the success of Dragon Ball Super and the various recent movies, this new series may end up being rather special.

I'd rather see them all geriatric than like this.

I actually preferred Dragonball over DBZ. Goku's adventures as a kid were much more fun to follow rather his superpowered exploits later on.

That's why I enjoyed DB Super so much, it was a mix between the fun of the original series and fights of Z.

Never really got into DB as a kid. By the time I got into the whole thing I was at that age where "woa big explosions just got bigger!" was more appealing than a little kid running around. Can't wait until my son hits like 3 or 4 to watch it with him.
