Welcome to the 2nd Round of the DPAD Top Movies Face/Off series! 🥸

The two movies facing off today are:

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)

No Country for Old Men (2007)

No Country for Old Men is a brilliant adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel. It's a bleak masterpiece from the Coen Brothers and deserved Oscar win for them.

But shit... I'm going to give it to Life of Brian on this one, probably one of the greatest screen comedies ever made and undoubtedly the Monty Python troupe's masterpiece. Thank God for ex-Beatle and big Python fan George Harrison for mortgaging his house to fund it when no studio would. The movie also endured a pretty heavy hate campaign from conservative Christians who felt the film was blasphemous and made light of the life of Jesus Christ (Christ does appear in the film in a cameo, and he's treated with complete respect). Since then, Life of Brian has achieved a longevity as one of the all time great satires of organized religion, Hollywood religious films and fanaticism to boot.

I really like No Country for Old Men. Awesome movie.

Life of Brian is so iconic though.

Tough one for me.

I don't like mixing religion and comedy so I will be voting for No Country for Old Men rather than Life of Brian. Tommy Lee Jones is a great actor and I saw it had Woody Harrelson as well so it seems like it would be an interesting movie to watch, even though it is a bit grim.

Dude are you serious? The whole point of why the Pythons made Life of Brian is because they rejected the notion that religion is a taboo subject for comedy. And as the movie shows, there are many things about organized religion that deserve mockery and sometimes scorn.

Wouldn't the world be a better place if we could mock things that people hold sacred? Like Islam? Granted, you could get your chopped off for poking fun at Mohammed the Prophet, but it's frustrating that Muslims are afforded this special privilege and Christians not. Or better yet, how about transgender people? The lunatic liberals tell us that troons don't deserve to be mocked and made fun off because they're 'stunning and brave.' But recent events have shown us that many troons are a bunch of mentally ill psychopaths who'd happily cheer the deaths of us normies if given the chance. If that's not a prime source for comedy I don't know what is.

I was late to watch No Country so it had been hyped up a lot for me. It really didnt live up to expectation. It was good, but exceptionally so like I was led to believe. Had I heard nothing, I probably would have been more impressed. Cast was however exceptional if I remember right. At least a half dozen actors I enjoy.

Life of Brian on the other hand is just comedy brilliance. Makes a mockery of Jesus and has you in stitches the whole time. The Holy Grail is still my favorite Monty Python films, but this one is a close second.

So I am voting Life of Brian, but its a close decision.

Honestly I absolutely loved No Country For Old Men. Absolutely fantastic film. However, it's up against the funniest movie ever made. Life Of Brian is quite simply the greatest comedy ever made and at that time it was taking a hell of a risk, it was brave in a way that a film doing the same thing today would not be, and for that it deserves our love and our respect.

I just prefer to chill when watching movies and I find that jokes about religion just aren't my cup of tea. It is a combo that some people like but its just not for me.

Life of Brian wins this vote and will move on to Round 3.

I think I will call it Life of Brian directly next time, I think that adding the Monty Python's at the beginning is a bit unnecessary, seeing as there are no other major movies sharing the same name.
