Welcome to the 2nd Round of the DPAD Top Movies Face/Off series!

The two movies facing off today for your vote are:

Alien (1979)
MTMyNTAy

Ex Machina (2015)

I liked Ex Machina, but its not a great film by any means. Has a lot of handwaving and plot holes. It is a very good mass market "wow" type of film though.

Alien is a solid suspense film. Utilizes the constrictive environment of the ship all alone in space to frame the field of play. Then has a cast of capable smart protagonists who must use the strengths/weaknesses they posses to try and outsmart/survive a superior predator.

This is actually a good match up with both having the REAL liability being an android and how the human character learn they cannot trust them.

idk both films are probably trash that is only voted on because of nostalgia and such.
What's Ex Machina even doing here?

Although Aliens is far superior, Alien is a still a hell of a trip.

yeah your right we need more anime movies here particularly whatever c-tier anime shinji liked at the specific time that made it into this contest.

While Ex Machina looks interesting, Alien wins my vote because it's a sci fi classic, a great thriller, possesses a well crafted soundtrack, and is also a fitting demonstration of good writing. Particularly with the writing, although Ripley was gender swapped before production, the character Ripley is still better written than almost all female characters today. In my view, Ripley is written well throughout the franchise and provides a good link between the various films of the quadrilogy.

so if we think about this was this the first trans character?

Well actually Snes nes, every movie in the second round has received multiple votes either in the nomination phase or in the first round. So every movie at this point is appreciated by at least a few people.

Yeah true I'm just here trolling. I don't mean to smear anyone's opinions unnecessarily.

Alien > Aliens

Both are truly amazing films, but I don't really think one needs to put one over the other, given one is horror and the other is more action movie in nature.

Also, what's with the black square Avatar?

I largely prefer atmospheric slow burn horror to action in general

There's 10 minutes of action in a 2,5 hour movie. The rest is suspense building up. But Alien defenders are pretending it to be Transformers.

Apart from it's amazing production design and the chestburster concept, Alien is fairly standard slasher movie with one dimentional characters.

I find the terminator films overall a complete waste of space of something that could've been great. The first one and the second one while being the only two I watched were not very good looking at as a complete series. Looking at the series now especially you realize this. Eventually it won't be cool to like terminator anymore either and the films will just fade away due to lack of real substance to them.

yeah give me the really's and the bacon's all you want its the truth the series wasn't ever good outside of being a action film.

I think its best not to focus on modern reboots/sequels when reviewing franchises as a whole. I can understand seeing the modern iterations, which suck the formula dry yet are crap anyway, may cause burnout on the past iterations, but its best to focus on the originals as they were before the modern crap happened.

Terminator 1 can function as a standalone thriller/sci fi film pretty well, while the 2nd does require connection to the 1st to make sense. That doesn't mean that T2 is worse, but it is a proper sequel that builds on the previous entry and made a good franchise. ( before 4 and later crapped out the franchise, but I pretend they never exist as I have not and will not ever see them) Terminator 3 is okay, it is not franchise destroying but it isn't as much of a standout as the first 2 either.

I agree the first two are good movies on their own I kinda just find it weird they kept going with them they just ruined the whole thing storywise. I thought the first one was a great story and two was a great action movie. Just not a favorite of mine I guess.

Cameron doesn't own the franchise. It's exchanged hands many times and become a money laundering scheme
