Holy Crap. I haven't seen Chungking Express in years but I remember it being a haunting look at Hong Kong. Not surprising, since it's a Wong Kar Wai film. It gets my vote for lingering in my head for so long.

I can take or leave the others. Jaws is a classic but not really my favorite film from Steven Spielberg. And while were on the subject of Spieberg, I've never seen Ready Player One nor do I plan to. My Cousin Vinny is a good movie but not really a favorite of mine. And Taken and Downfall are just memorable for the memes.

Jaws introduced the concept of the blockbuster, killed beach attendence/tourism and unfortunately led to mass cullings of sharks to the point several species were driven to near extinction.

As for the movie, the shark looks fake, but the visuals are absolute next level nightmare fuel. Actually regret watching it. Very, very few worse ways to go, though humans definitely can do it with the likes of Zodiac, Buffalo Bill, Jigsaw. Otherwise you start entering territory of outright supernatural/alien shit like Event Horizon, the Thing, the Blob, that poor glasses guy from the Mummy.

Jaws for me (although Downfall was a close second). Watched that shit way too young and the head falling out of the boat still gets me everytime.

What is even with the 2 stories in one movie though? Is there a common connection or are they just both in the same city?

It's a couple of vignettes involving people trying to find love in Hong Kong. Not exactly an original idea in movies, but the way Wong Kar Wai shoots them is unique. This was the film that first got him noticed worldwide.

This is between Jaws and Downfall ("Der Untergang" in the original title). Ultimately, Jaws is a dumb shark horror-movie and by modern standards wouldn't be anything special, shark vs human has been done to death. It really is more of a historical movie. Still fun to watch though.

However, Downfall is one of the RARE good German movies. I didn't watch it for years when it came out because I thought it'd be just another lame WW2-movie (like, the only 3 genres German movie makers do is WW2, crime shit and (bad) comedy), but I was wrong. It really gives you goosebumps as you follow the final hours of Hitler and those in his vicinity. The intensity of the scenes is comparable to Inglorious Basterds, minus the Hollywood-bloat.

So because of this, Downfall gets my vote.

tl;dr: Hitler mustn't lose.

And Taken and Downfall are just memorable for the memes.
So you haven't actually watched Downfall, ok.

You got me. I've only watched the scene where Hitler breaks down and the various parodies of it. I'm sure it's a good movie, but I really have no interest in watching Hitler's last hours dramatized onscreen.
That's what I'm talking about: It's not "dramatized". It's very grounded in reality, which makes it so chilling. Give it a try.

This is the sort of lame takedown used on Aliens too. Shark appears for a minute or so in the movie and shark hunting is roughly a third of it. The suspense that is built towards it is what really matters. Primarily the movie is about small coastal town politics and Brody's trying to prioritize between his children's safety and town's well being. It's hardly a "dumb shark horror-movie". Nothing formulaic about it.

I've only seen Jaws, Ready Player One, and Taken. Haven't seen the others. So my choice is between those three.
Taken is out, because, well, it's good but I simply prefer the other two.

Ready Player One, I loved. It has pretty much everything; a Distopian version of the Metaverse, how the real world clashes with it, both the pros and cons of it... It's a good movie, with a nice message at the end. Even my wife liked it. So anyone that refuses to see it is a philistine.

And then there's Jaws. Say what you will, but it is a classic. Sure, it paints sharks in a much worse light than they really are, but the fact that it has had the impact we all know about, shows how powerful the movie really was.

It pains me to do this. I really really really want to vote for Ready Player One. But unfortunately, Jaws is simply a better movie overall. I might change my mind down the line.
Saying it now: If Jaws gets too many votes, I'm changing it. Especially if no one votes for Ready Player One. It can't go down with 0 votes.

TOWN POLITICS

lol

So you haven't actually watched Jaws, okay.

This is a sneaky tough one. Jaws is a classic. Taken was one of the better thrillers of that decade. Ready Player One was fun and unfairly maligned. My Cousin Vinny is another classic of a different variety. Downfall for the memes.

I guess I'm going My Cousin Vinny but this wasn't easy.

I think it is very fairly maligned. There is a reason the only version of that film I have on my Plex sever is the RiffTrax one.

In the book the mayor was literally involved with the Mob.

Though changing quite a few things from the book was for the better. Yes, even in the movie town politics is a major thing and multiple people get eaten due to its interference. Brody wanted the beaches closed, Mayor pressured by city council to not scare off the tourists and vacationers before July 4th festivals only gives 24 hours and what happens? Several people die horribly.

Coast Guard also refused to lend aid with bs about Amity being outside of jurisdiction, which should have at minimum caused a gigantic scandal and possibly court martials.

But what is Breathless about? Is it like Love Actually?

Breathless is about the romance between a French car thief (turned murderer) and an American journalist. I was referring moreso about the cinematography and editing decisions however

Love Actually is a British Romance/Drama thing. It has good actors in it but the relationship problems are just annoying.

If you think RP1 is his worst, you haven't seen 1941.

I just want to add: Ready Player One is rally, really bad. It was a movie about games as envisioned by a Hollywood-boomer who only has read about games, but never played himself. Cringe movie and an insult towards all true gamers. The girl didn't even use a Dead or Alive-avatar, wtf.
