Welcome to the DPAD Top Movies Face/Off competition! 💪

The vote between Terminator 2 and Total Recall is still live HERE .

The two movies facing off in this thread are:

Jaws (1975)

The Terminator (1984)

Giving Arnie the nod here. Both great stories of a seemingly unstoppable killer. I think Terminator is a better paced film that keeps the audience more engaged.

Jaws, to me anyways, is the perfect example of a movie being "of its time". I watched it again a few years ago and it's kinda dreadful. Terminator on the other hand is seemingly timeless, it is still so good to watch even today. Not to mention it has a crazy "cool" factor.

They messed up gun audio in 5.1 mix in this scene.

The only way you can get the original gun audio is on a VHS tape and even on the VHS there is one mistake where the shotgun fires like a machine gun and the machine gun fires like a shotgun which they replicated when replacing the sounds for some reason I guess no one noticed which gun was being fired. To be fair to them most of the gun is obscured in the one part where the wrong one fires and you need to be a nerd to be able to tell which one is which at that point.

I've always thought the dressed up sounds they added starting with the DVD versions or at least I think they started with the DVD versions? But I always thought they sounded out of place all the rest of the audio is more natural sounding I really would love a Blu-ray with the original sound for gunshots even if they're technically lower quality sounds.

Yeah, for DVD they made a new 5.1 mix and replaced most sound effects because original was in mono. It's very aggressive with surround sound and have this goof when shotgun and machine gun effects are misplaced. They never rereleased the original mono track but it's available on torrented copies.

The oop "Special Edition" DVD has the original mono audio as an alt track and is still the only way I'll watch the movie.

They fucked the audio on all the current releases and all the sound effects were completely redone for the worse imo (Just compare the audio in the scene where the Terminator kills the wrong Sarah Connor). Plus it has that weird trend where the bullet impact sounds are louder than the gunfire.... =S

While Jaws does have a good story and characters, I think The Terminator is a better film, even though it does have a similar story to Jaws. Both Jaws and The Terminator are based more upon their villains than the heroes of the stories, with the main cast composed of a few, well written characters.

While Jaws does have a powerful villain, there is the ability for the town to avoid the villain by simply preventing access to the beach which the shark frequents. With The Terminator though, there is no avoiding the villain as he will not stop hunting his target until he completes his mission. I think the higher stakes of The Terminator make it a more interesting and thrilling movie, with Jaws being a simpler and less intense movie.

I also prefer Terminator 1 to Terminator 2, as 2 is called Judgement Day but doesn't have a strong enough connection to Judgement Day to justify its name. I think it would have been easier to just to name it Terminator 2, without the byline, to be honest.
