I've done this often since I was little, and normally it doesn't bother me - although it can freak out others sometimes, lol.

The problem is that when I sleep *really* deeply, I sometimes don't move or switch positions during sleep, and I'll lay with my open eye (whichever side) laying on the pillow, drying out until it gets so dry that I wake up with fiery stabbing pain and agony in the bone-dry eye. It's so bad that I struggle to return to sleep for a long time when it happens and then my vision is all blurry in that eye for at least a full day. I can't stand it, but not much I can do about it. It just happened again last night, so it's fresh on my...eye. 😛

Start looking for answers, that sounds horrendous dude. There are doctors that specialize in sleep disorders and medicine concerning that. Schedule an appointment and be prepared to visit several others, as most doctors don’t usually hit the nail on the head first go
I don't consider it a sleep disorder. I hate when I get the severe eye drying, but it's not a routine thing. But when it does happen, yeah, it's awful. Today, everything is so blurry and my eye won't re-hydrate fully until, I've at least had another nights sleep without the incident repeating. But I appreciate the tip, nonetheless.
My sister does that at times. She sits on a couch and falls asleep with her eyes open. Looks weird.

I don't do that, because I'm not possessed by the devil.

No problem. But something is abnormal, and you ought to get it checked. Maybe you and others who have that problem have a specific gene mutation that causes the open eye(s)? Ask for a comprehensive neuropathy panel to seek which gene(s) might be causing your condition. There may be something involving your genes that is impeding normal sleep. Possibly something as simple as a nutrient is being cut off or depleted because of a mutated gene, for example

My older brother did that. Or maybe he still does. It's not like I see him sleep now that we're adults lol

It always freaked me out a bit.

Well, at the risk of sounding indifferent and a bit anti-establishment, I don't have much faith in mainstream medicine. I know there can be value to be found, but more often than not, it's just shuttling you from one specialist to another, all of whom only know how to mask symptoms and write those scripts so that you're "cured" rather than treating underlying and whole-organism causes (and wellness)- in my experience. (With all due respect to the many practitioners who are filled with good intentions, no matter the systemic rot to which they belong.)

If my leg gets severed, I'll consider going to the ER. 😜 Otherwise, I'm good.

Try using a formed sleep mask for sleeping in. You might find it helps out, or at the very least causes your eyes not to dry out as much.
Yeah, I've thought about that. Maybe I'll try it out. It may take a bit of getting used to, and it's not like it's a nightly thing, but if it prevents the occurrences, it could be a pretty simple remedy.

It might be worth seeing a doctor as the causes are quire variable but it can be addressed

Also perhaps invest in a humidifier for your bedroom. Very useful esp during this time of year when humidity is low. This should at least ensure less dry eye. I bought one a few years back to help me get to sleep as I have a very irritable throat and I have found it beneficial.

Not just you bud. Same with me. Funny enough, I thought I was the only person on earth that had the problem.

My entire life is of an idiopathic nature, therefore and by extension, any condition within this life is similarly of unknown origins. 😜

Never even knew that was possible 🤷‍♂️
Im the type that needs almost complete darkness to get some sleep and can't even imagine sleeping with eyes open . Might want to look into wearing some type of sleeping mask to maybe help keep your eyes closed ( if that would even help )

Oh, I must have complete darkness too. I don't just lay down with my eyes open and fall asleep while I'm staring at the wall, ha. They open when sleeping.
