Will the next Paper Mario be great?

We're in a bit of a rough patch right now, I believe it's four in a row now we've missed the target with each respective Paper Mario that has released

It could be argued that there hasn't been an excellent Paper Mario game since Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door in 2004

But what about this next one? Will Nintendo finally deliver a great Paper Mario game for the first time in 20+ years?

I really doubt it. Doesn't seem like Nintendo is all that interested in the series beyond just cranking them out with some sort of secret sauce gimmick. Wasn't there some interview that revealed that Miyamoto places arbitrary limitations on whomever is making Paper Mario. Yeah, that pretty much sealed my opinion on the series going forward. It will never have the freedom to be as good as it could be...

I still like Paper Mario was a one off and should be celebrated as such instead of trying to emulate into a series.

Heard this rumor before too, but have never looked into it... maybe that will need to change. It does seem like he has the ultimate say, but I have no idea why the Paper Mario series is struggling so badly. They're so mediocre now

Kind of agree. Paper Mario was the GOAT, the second one was really good, great even, but felt pretty flat at times too. After that, the series has been very shallow

As someone who has an obsessive love of the first paper mario game, i'm sorry but no. There was a time when I was pretty pissed about all this but now I just accept it lol.

Someone above intelligent systems has to step in and A. give direction and B. get rid of that stupid rule that they can't make unique characters based on Miyamoto's designs. That's why the last few games just have a bunch of toads and generic characters.

So basically you can blame Miyamoto, and I don't know what that's about, jealousy or just being extremely controlling, but yeah. Don't count on it.

Not if Miyamoto is involved, on not if its developed again like a budget title
He doesn't even have to be involved as I understand it, he just placed some rules down and they're not going to go against that.

It's been 20 years since the last good game and there have been what, at least 4 or 5 since then? All signs point to no. The series has no momentum and has been heading in the wrong direction since the disappointing Wii game.

@Chozofication so it's true, Miyamoto is stifling creativity? Is it just the Paper Mario series that he's being harsh with? In Super Mario Odyssey, they created those robot characters in the Wooded Kingdom, among a few other unique characters

He really guards his franchises and yeah it seems Paper Mario got the worst of this.

He wants his franchises to go the most safe route possible, and that is why i've come to the conclusion Aonuma got Zelda over Koizumi. He must have saw that Aonuma would stick to the script. I mean Miyamoto outright told Koizumi he'd never work on Zelda again after *links awakening though he went back on that out of the desperate need to get another zelda out after ocarina.

Those story time segments in Mario Galaxy? Koizumi had to create that in secret otherwise Miyamoto would have put a stop to it. He seems to hate others taking creative liberties with his designs.

You have to respect Miyamoto for the empire he helped to build, but it's fair to say he's significantly hurt games here and there over the past 2 decades.

Edit : *It's late and i meant to say Koizumi upset Miyamoto with Link's awakening, not link to the past.

I haven't really enjoyed one since thousand year door. I don't know why they feel the need to drastically change the formula. Sometimes I feel like some franchises are best left to iterate on rather than try to reinvent the wheel. Star fox, pikmin, paper Mario to name a few.

Exactly. I don't know why Nintendo insists on fucking around with their franchises the way they do. They all like to believe that gimmicks will somehow trump tried and true methods for some reason…

At the end of the day, what the hell is Nintendo even doing with this series? What's their goal? Or are they just going to continue to squander potential greatness? It makes zero sense, Paper Mario is possibly the most charming game on the N64

A+ for its World Building
A+ for Allies and NPCs
A+ for the Overworld
A- for Inventory System
A for the Battle System
B+ Dungeons
B+ Story

What in the world is Intelligent Systems doing to this once great franchise

I wish they made a sequel to Super Paper Mario which is one of my all time favorite games

Probably for the same reason that all Yoshi games are mediocre now. These games are considered of a lesser tier and can just be shoveled out to the masses with a cheap gimmick and only a little effort. That formula equals millions of sales for them. Each one is just a cash grab cash cow since the people buying it don't seem to care.

That leaves me feeling sad because the originals were masterpieces and were even innovative. Mario RPG and Paper Mario were both innovative. Yoshi's Island was innovative. I will never forget my time spent with these games and yet I don't care even a little bit about the stuff they're shoveling out nowadays.

This turned out to be the worst wish of all time Don. It's Paper Mario time now though. After seeing what the NS2 can do, there is hope. The rut that Paper Mario has been in since after TTYD (2004 forward) may be coming to an end. Hopefully there's one in the works set for late 2026 or early 2027

Paper Mario as an RPG is dead. They brought back Mario RPG so they could have a Mario RPG franchise. Next Paper Mario will be another 5/10 gimmicky nonsense that no one wants.

Hot take the only good paper Mario games are the ones that aren't baby's first turn based combat system. Super Paper Mario, Origami King, both great games. Paper Jam was better than the rest and that isn't even a Paper Mario game that's just a game with Paper Mario in it.

Fuck Paper Mario!

I want another mario rpg but this time, actually hard and I wanna see some blood out of mfers when I smack em.

I sometimes ask myself if we'll ever get another difficult Mario RPG again. Brothership had some okay boss battles when it came to difficulty. And much more difficult enemies at the end portion of the game, but the game was very dull besides the combat unfortunately…

The only way to make Paper Mario games difficult is to deliberately limit yourself. Restrict the amount of items you can use, only upgrade badge points etc.

I was playing TYYD on Wednesday and I realized….

The whole game is Metroid Prime'd. instead of scanning everything, you have to examine everything and then also have Gombella comment on everything. Cartoon talking simulator YUCK!

Both RPG series would be much better with 50% of the talking removed

Also I'm loving Brothership so I don't know what the heck you're talking about 🌝👌

Dialogue is pretty much the only thing that saved The Origami King. Without the writing and humor of Taro Kudo that game goes from the 6/10 it is to 4/10
