Thread: Do you collect 4k UHDs? I'd like to discuss the current state of the medium in 2024

LG has discontinued all Blu-ray players, including the UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players, with remaining units only available while stocks last.

The announcement echoes similar moves from Oppo in 2018 and Samsung in 2019, when both companies exited the optical disc player market.

LG has now officially discontinued its Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray players, as reflected on LG's online portals and confirmed by multiple sources to FlatpanelsHD.

A shame they were a decent alternative to the more expensive players on the market :(

Goddammit @Dacon

This pisses me off so much. Might just return my copy unopened. Was excited to see the third movie

Maybe they'll offer a swap if theres enough pushback, sometimes that happens

This is why i am always skeptical of new releases of older films. They do these little nips and tucks. And often they do not explicitly tell you and use a nebulous "modified from its original blah blah blah"

While i had post release edits. I can at least tolerate them when they are explicit about changes and why they were made.

Like in Yakuza Graveyard they call out that they edited out the slur against Koreans. Made it clear what changed and why. Not ideal but better than sneakily doing it.

Yeah needs a change log.

I've found my next one that I want now...

It's the UK Limited It Follows. Since 4k blu rays are region free (super cool and not expected) - it's a great looking set.

Fuckin' sick.

Second Sight might be my favorite of the boutique labels

As someone who views 4k UHD as a preservation of the medium... its upsetting

Luckily, of the 550 or so titles i own, this is my first encounter with censorship. Thought that BS was reserved for streaming services

We are in agreement that there will be no 8K movie releases right? Like 4K is kind of the sweet spot for tech. Blu rays still look good, so without being a retarded retard like that unreal tournament front cover (this is an actual screen shot!) — we have reached the point where there is no real benefit to increasing fidelity.

Right?

Yeah, this is it man

Convenience always wins the market over fidelity, and many view physical libraries as antiquated despite their superior quality. Having movies in your home is a niche

The studios would rather be paid in perpetuity than allow consumers to curate their own collections any longer. It is what it is, and from the looks of it, these streaming services are aiming to become the new 'cable' as well. Miss me with all of that tbh

i might snag a spare UB820 just to keep in case my current unit ever gives out. In it for the long haul

I mean it is far better to stream. They made using disks wildly annoying with unskippable shit.

I get that it's a different thing. But piracy was so attractive because of the speed and ease of use. Then Netflix basically took that model and made it legal and it's hard to go back.

For collecting and preserving the disk is great.

At these prices 4K UHD will remain a niche and will probably be the last format. Streaming looks "good enough" for the masses and most don't have the equipment or the space to take advantage of the audio.

I wish 4K movies were around $10-15 instead of $25-30 like they are now. There would be so many more impulse purchases. Take out the Blu-ray discs if you have to.

Gotta snag em while they're on sale or buy pre-owned. Gruv.com is a valued resource, Mr Tay

The acquisition's crown jewels include Woo's action masterpieces "Hard Boiled," "The Killer," the complete "Better Tomorrow" trilogy, "Bullet in the Head" and "Once a Thief." The library also boasts Ringo Lam's "City on Fire," "Prison on Fire" and its sequel; Eric Tsang's "Aces Go Places"; Tsui's "Peking Opera Blues"; Tony Ching's "Chinese Ghost Story" trilogy; and additional hits like Wai Ka-fai's "Peace Hotel," Andrew Kam and Johnnie To's "The Big Heat" and Alex Law's "Now You See It, Now You Don't."

YES!!! Now I might be able to get The Killer and Hard Boiled on Blu Ray finally. The asshats at Criterion Collection never responded to any of my emails on when they were going to release them.

Looking to pick up the Indiana Jones movies in 4K. Anyone here seen them done that way? Transfers worth it?

I don't actually own them on any format and not on any streaming we have currently so I'm curious.

Sony has announced that it will cease production of Blu-ray discs next month. In a statement shared by the company, it announced that "Blu-ray disc media, recording mini discs, recording MD data, mini DV cassettes" will all get the axe in February, confirming towards the end of the announcement that "there will be no successor models".

Another nail in the physical media coffin
