Thread: Do I want Windows 11?

This rig shipped with Win10, and I like it fine. I usually avoid OS upgrades until absolutely necessary because they often come with headaches.

How is Windows 11 here at the back end of 2022? Do I want to upgrade or just stick with 10?

Thank you very nice.

Coming from an IT guy; most of the bugs/kinks are worked out. Overall it *is* a better OS, but not by much.

Windows has largely been the same OS since Windows NT. Don't believe me? Open up the control panel and look at the interface.

I mean, it's windows NT version 11.

Tried 11 and hated it last year. Extra clicks just to get to things, the start menu isn't configurable like it in in 10 with widgets. It just feels like shit honestly.

I only use windows now for gaming though, so I might upgrade once direct storage or whatever finally comes out. I use arch for everything else.

Well windows 10 will eventually run out of support. I switched to windows 11 and its been mostly fine. What I do like most is the encryption signature protected secure boot, this protects against root kits. Nothing can run under the OS, so the nastiest of viruses that evade all detection and removal by running underneath windows cannot run.

Did they improve the issue with Windows 8/10 where there are like three different interfaces (mobile/touch friendly, some ripped from 7, and others that felt like XP and 95) to do the same things? Absolute menu hell to navigate and look for stuff like I was used to.

Shit, that sucks with the Start menu. That's the only thing I really liked in 10 over 7.

Been using it for a while and I dig it a lot. I prefer the centralized taskbar as I'm on a 4K setup, and I like the contextual icons like cut, copy, rename, or delete, coupled with the fact that if you cut or copy the only show icon after that is paste. Still, I'm constantly moving files around due to work so to me it's a godsend in that regard. It's a little more streamlined, but you can dig deeper if you want. (y)

Did they fix the power bug already? Afaik there was a problem where Win11 would remove like 10% of your gpu's prowess. I was waiting until that's fixed, to avoid not being able to play certain games anymore.

That can't be wide-spread, first I've heard of it 😛

Quest 2 did have problems on Windows 11 but last time I tried it, it had been fixed.

You don't use keyboard shortcuts?

There was some concern over VBS lowering frame rates, but that was CPU related and greatly exaggerated by one of the more mainstream publications. Windows 11 supposedly turns it on by default (wasn't my experience), but you can disable it if you'd prefer.

I'd say no. They have added extra steps for simple things. You want to do something with right click? Well now those actions are hidden behind a pop out menu. I find it to be a more tedious experience all around. I went back to Win 10.

It has same issue as windows 10 as so much of windows 7/8 are still there as they go modern. Control panel and such. It's a fine os though for speed and security IMHO.

It's definitely a step past the clusterfuck that was 8.1. You can tell they're taking cues from macOS.

However the honest truth is Windows will always be fresh lipstick on the same pig until they completely rebuild it.

I'm not looking forward to it messing with the bootloader just as Windows 10 enjoyed to do, but I'll have to update eventually.
You know what, I'm starting the process now, made a full backup last week so I can repair my PC if required.

Edit:
Update is finished, took around two hours.
It didn't mess with the bootloader (GRUB2) so that's a plus. I have an SSD split into a Windows and a Linux partition.
No changes in speed when compared to Windows 10 from what I can tell just moving around in menus, folders and doing a test online payment (that was my biggest fear, my bank's 2FA not working after updating).
The new interface is... I dunno, the default theme colors, responsiveness and all that are fine but it looks like someone took hints from macOS and GNOME 40. Not liking it much but we'll be using this at work in the near future so I better get used to it now.

Edit 2:
So Win 11 re-enables fast boot after installation without asking first, thus I was unable to write to its partition from Linux. Disabling fast boot and shutting down completely, then logging back into Linux fixed that problem.

You should always have different operating systems on different drives.

Can't argue with it adding an extra layer of safety. Might do that in case I get to install another SSD.
What I'm doing currently is having one partitioned SSD with only OS files (Linux, Windows), and all my other stuff, be it documents, game files, browser downloads... on a HDD that all operating systems have access to and backed up every month.

well fuck, my browser and watching videos using VCL are super slow now. wtf W11 .... Even mouse is lagging ...
