Mario Kart 64 sucks balls, and you cant even listen to game music when playing multiplayer

Only one type of vehicle and the single player might as well be non existent

Arguably the worst game in the entire franchise for those not blinded by nostalgia

I sleep 😴

Diddy Kong Racing on the other hand has a fully fleshed out single player campaign, and a larger and cooler cast of characters (Banjo AND Conker!)

You can drive a kart, fly a plane, or take the hovercraft. This leads to further variability among the race tracks and is something even Mario Kart would loosely copy years later because it was so cool

Frankly, N64 kids like myself were blessed to have Rare making games for Nintendo that gen because apart from Smash Bros and Zelda... there wasnt all that much to play without their involvement

Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo, Conker, Diddy Kong Racing... the best games on the system 👌 🙌 👏 💯 💪

Teezzy, you a real one for this post.

Tiptup alone makes DKR the superior title. There's more personality in his gloved hands than anything in MK64.

I think I'm more surprised Nintendo haven't bought over elements from DKR to MK, the variety of vehicles would be great in MK8D, bikes and quads ain't it compared to hovercraft and planes and a single player offering like DKR would be so fun in MK.

Even the item leveling system is cool and unique, would be a fun mechanic for the next Mario Kart game

I've always said other franchises did kart racing better than Mario Kart, and DKR is up there if not the best. I find Mario Kart to be largely boring as a franchise.

I think Double Dash!! and MK8 brought a lot of neat innovations to the gameplay

There are a lot of fun alternatives however

Remember Konami Krazy Racers on GBA?! Was fun as heck

Mario Kart 64 is the worst game in the franchise. The only thing it has going for it is good track design. It's slow, the rubber banding is horrible, the racers are 2D fucking sprites. I never understood the praise for this game.

DKR is S tier magic that has never been replicated since. Adventure mode you say? Silver coin challenges? Secret worlds? Secret characters? An actual difficulty level? This game had it all. And yes, @regawdless , the music. The goddamn fucking music.

Mk64. Never could get into Diddy Kong Racing. I also never tried Mickey's Speedway USA.

Otherwise Rarewares output on 64 was tier 1.

I used to think DD was the best, but going back to both of them I like the technicality of 64 better.

MK64 was the king of all racers. Double Dash!! had the makings to be better but 64 is too much of a classic to lose

I would say that MK8 DLX is the king now but they need to fine tune the experience a bit more to earn the title. But MK8 DLX is one hell of a game, the racing mechanics and techniques are all very impressive. The racetracks receive a B-

I've never really touched either, but from the images in the first post it appears you can play as a clock in the Diddy Kong game. That's so fucking stupid that it has crossed the line into brilliance. It gets my vote.

Fucking Nintendo sitting on quite a few great arcade racing games, that nobody on any other platform has really come close to cloning properly.

Diddy Kong racing was amazing, it needs to get revived.

You had to unlock the clock as well as Drumstick, the chicken

Clock was unlocked in time trial mode and was def a challenge

Why aren't there more new kart racers these days? Everyone lets Nintendo's Mario Kart practically hold a monopoly on the genre. Sony doesn't pour any money or effort into any cartoonish kart racers and neither does Microsoft. When was the last Crash Team Racing game? There's only the first one right?

LBP Karting and ModNation Racers both flopped hard, maybe that's why.

Sony too busy making queer gaming content, find a way to insert that into a Kart Racer and Sony will be on it.

Granted, Nitro Fueled is a remake of the OG

I think only the Naughty Dog version (and the Nitro Fueled remake based on it) were epic. The rest were after Universal gained the license back and third partied it to lesser companies. I could be misremembering, but I seem to remember them being bad copies of the OG game.

There was that Jak racing game by Naughty Dog too lol

Not to mention that Diddy has full 3D models for all vehicles. MK64 has f'ing 2D sprites...

DKR, but Crash Team Racing was better than both of them.

Nope. Boring tracks, nothing memorable in the music department. Homing weapons are useless because they constantly crash in to walls.
