Thread: [DF] Why Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's 40FPS Fidelity Mode Is A Big Deal For Consoles

We shot this a few weeks back, but finally it's live on YouTube. 30fps? Try 40fps! Ratchet and Clank has beefed up its fidelity mode when you switch your PS5 to 120Hz output. Instead of updating every 33.3ms (30fps) on a 60Hz screen, Ratchet updates every 25ms (40fps) at 120Hz, the same consistency but smoother. In fact, it's like a midway point between 30fps and 60fps - and you keep all of the graphical advantages of the full-fat fidelity mode. The implications here are fascinating, as John and Rich discuss.

Makes me wish I had a 120hz display to test it out. I played R&C im fidelity mode and thought the performance was solid enough. Those extra frames would have made it even smoother.

I was a "can't play 30fps anymore" guy but tried Ratchet that way and was surprised to not be sickened by it. I played the whole game that way and I couldn't stand spiderman or Demon's Souls for more than a few minutes at 30.

My brother has a CX and when he finally plays it I'll have him do it at 40fps and I'll be jealous...

Thats exactly why I always stay in fidelity mode (on games that have it) and decide if its smooth enough. Cuz I know as soon as I try performance mode its hard to go back.

lol yeah that's exactly what I did with Ratchet. I realized it wasn't burning my eyeballs, so I refused to change the mode until I started a 2nd playthrough just to see how the Performance RT mode looked.

And honestly, I felt like the reflections took a major hit in the 60fps mode. Suddenly the materials didn't look as impressive because the reflections were all noisy or something. I'm not a tech guy, so it's hard to explain it but my brain recognized the downgrade right away.

40 is way better than 30fps. Good for console players. Personally, I can't go lower than around 50fps with gsync on PC, depending on the game. Usually play at way higher fps.

Console games with a controller on a TV are more "forgiving" regarding the fps though, so I could see 40fps being pretty ok. Very nice to see the option here!
