Denis Villeneuve says 'movies have been corrupted by television' "Frankly, I hate dialogue. Dialogue is for theatre and television. I don't remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. I'm not interested in dialogue at all. Pure image and sound, that is the power of cinema, but it is something not obvious when you watch movies today. Movies have been corrupted by television"

"Think of 'Oppenheimer' ... It is a three-hour, rated-R movie about nuclear physics that is mostly talking. But the public was young, that was the movie of the year by far for my kids. There is a trend. The youth love to watch long movies because if they pay, they want to see something substantial. They are craving meaningful content"

Partially true. If a movie is going to be successful in the theaters it needs to be a spectacle. I bet you most people can't even remember a noteworthy line from avatar 2 but it still printed money.

That said, the movies that I go back and rewatch at home have to have something more than strong sound and visuals to get me to rewatch.

I don't completely agree about his dialog critique, but I do find a lot of recent movies look like they belong on a premium cable channel rather than a movie theater. It's probably the combination of lack of proper movie stars + cheap CGI.

See, and here I've been thinking that most movies in the past 10 years have sucked because the writing is trash, and all of my favorite movies from the 1990s and prior are totally fuggin memorable because of how damn quotable they are!

But hey, you do you and I'll do me, Denis.

Ok, me and my buddies NEVER quoted movie lines constantly when we hung out? I would think he was the same.

Maybe the dork ass zoomers don't do that shit because the movies they grew up with are unquotable piles of crap.

The guy just made a near $200 million Dune movie. I don't think he's jealous of what anyone else is getting to do.

Dialogue is for theater or television? Lol, clearly this is just a marketing publicity statement to get some more eyes on his name and the film he's directed

Remember in most TV shows (like plays) are done on a set with a few (more or less) fixed camera shots. So dialogue and physical actions have to carry the scene.

In film, the sky is the limit on camera work, scene scale and location.

I think this is being taken out of context a bit. He's talking about "show, don't tell" essentially and the power of visual storytelling. If you can show it to an audience, that is always the better way to go than explaining it via dialogue.

There are too many movies that rely on exposition dumps to explain the world or the stakes. He is probably one of the better visual story tellers making movies today and you can see that in his work; Blade Runner 2049 and Dune don't do that much world explaining but you pick up on how they work just fine because he goes out of his way for you to be able to see the world and how it functions.

It's not being taken out of context, his exact words were,

"Frankly, I hate dialogue. Dialogue is for theatre and television. I don't remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. I'm not interested in dialogue at all. He's an oblivious karen that owes much of his earned net worth due to DIALOGUE. How do you hate dialogue? It's not meant for cinema? This guy should of be making silent films if he were a man of his word. I love movies that opt for less words too but how are you going to completely abandon an integral part of filmmaking and even say you hate it? It's moronic

What he should have done was denounce woke writers and other talentless modern writers hired on for superhero flicks if he had the guts, but instead he spoke too broadly and made a fool of himself

When Joi is killed in Blade Runner Ryan Gosling strongly grieves. He doesn't say a word about it, but effect is done through visuals cues and acting.

If it were Nolan or Disney movie there would be off screen monologue "I FEEL SO SAD NOW". Or Harrison Ford would explain "HE FEELS SO SAD NOW". etc

That's what he means here.

Ah yes, the Joss Whedon effect

Dude's just mad tv is generally better than any movie in theaters these days

Males me laugh when anyone says an aspect of a game or movie is unimportant.

It's such a weird ass take to be all "I hate dialogue, dialogue is ruining movies".

There absolutely is such a thing as "the language of film" and its where the entire 'show dont tell' concept stems from. However, many of my all-time favorite flicks are primarily just people sitting around talking. I don't think clever banter should be bastardized. So silly. Video is an insanely versatile medium, and Villeneuve knows this.

I hate watching movies at home because MY FAMILY WILL ONLY SIT QUIETLY THROUGH A FLICK IF WE PAY $150 AND WATCH WITH DOZENS OF OTHER PEOPLE

Listen to what he says in a comment after that following the interviewer:

"Exactly. In a perfect world, I'd make a compelling movie that doesn't feel like an experiment but does not have a single word in it either," he continued. "People would leave the cinema and say, 'Wait, there was no dialogue?' But they won't feel the lack."

He's actually that dense. I know you want to think he meant what you thought, but this is one of those moments where a director loses his head and truly believes his vision alone is beyond words. I'm not gonna go all out and say he's totally wrong. He can probably knock one out of the park with no words all visuals but his box office success will simply not show the results he thinks it can. There's a reason fucking cavemen aren't movie stars in cinema lmao that's all I'd have to say to this shit head's face if I was the one to hear him mutter such ridiculous words. It's fine to have over the top ideas, but this guy's just being a dumbass here

"I don't remember movies because of a line."

"No, I am your Father."
"I'll be back."
"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."
"Life is like a box of Chocolates."
"The name is Bond. James Bond."
"We are not in Kansas anymore."
"How much have you ever lost in a coin flip?"

"It's not a bad life, it's just a bad day"
"You either die a hero, or live to see yourself become the villain"
"and my axe"

"I'VE ABANDONED MY CHILD! I'VE ABANDONED MY CHILD!... I'VE ABANDONED MY BOY!"
"You have none of me in you. You're just a bastard from a basket"
"I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE *sluuuuurp* I DRINK IT UP!"
"I AM THE THIRD REVELATION! IIIII AM THE THIRD REVELATION! I TOLD YOU I WOULD EAT YOU! I TOLD YOU I WOULD EAT YOU UP!"

These are things that are fun to randomly quote all from one movie.
