Dead Island 2 is still in active development at Dambuster Studios and could release this year, it's claimed.

That's according to industry insider Tom Henderson, who claims in a YouTube video that he's been speaking to people close to the game's development and that it's reportedly in a good state.

"According to everyone that I've been speaking to… the game decent state and it could be announced pretty soon with some kind of gameplay trailer," he said.

"A release date expected to be somewhere in Q4 2022, possibly leading up to next year if there is any problems with the development cycle."

Henderson also provided some insight into the game's plot and the beginning of the game.

"You're on a plane and there's a zombie outbreak on a plane… eventually the plane crashes into Hollywood, you survive and it's then your job to survive on the ground."

Dead Island 2 was first announced in 2014, and has since suffered a series of delays and changes of developer.

Originally developed by Yager Development, the game was then taken over by Sumo Digital. In 2019, Dambuster, an internal studio of Deep Silver took over the development of the game.

When the game was first revealed, the plot was said to revolve around the United States Armed Forces putting California under quarantine.

In 2020, a leaked version of the game said to be from 2015, made its way online.

Last week, it was claimed that the long-delayed title was shaping up well and could finally arrive this year.

During an Embracer earnings presentation on Thursday, the Q&A host commented on recent speculation about whether the game was still alive or not, before saying in an unofficial capacity that they believe it will be released during the company's next fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2023.

"It very clearly is [still alive], and I at least expect the release this financial year, or sorry next financial year I should say," he said. "So, is that reasonable and what can we expect from a title that has been in development for probably 10 years or so?"

Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors responded: "I can't talk about Dead Island 2 because it's not announced as such from the publisher. But we have just talked about [that] we have one unannounced AAA title… that you think is Dead Island 2, so it's hard for me to comment further on that.

"But I am excited about unannounced titles," he added with a laugh.

"Great, I'm excited you're excited," the host responded, leading to more laughter from Wingefors.

While not confirming anything directly, the conversation gave off the distinct impression that Dead Island 2's release may finally be on the horizon.

Dead Island 2 was first announced in 2014 and has since suffered a series of delays and changes of developer.

It was originally in the works at Spec Ops: The Line studio Yager, before development duties were taken over by Sumo Digital. Dambuster, an internal Deep Silver studio, then took over development in 2019.

Development hell lol.

Although to be fair, I will say that it is super refreshing to see a company not just shit an unfinished game out based on some artificial date they've pulled out of their ass. Delaying something for 8 years shows me two things:

1) the game is in bad shape

2) the developer/publisher care enough about putting out a good product not to release it in a shitty state, so I'm going to remain open-minded about this when it does release.

Maybe some lessons were learned from CD Projekt Red

The first one was dumb fun, but with Dying Light 2 I'm not sure how this is gonna really change the game.

Games with long dev cycles/dev hell rarely turn out well; especially when they weren't even hype to begin with.

Speaking on his podcast Sacred Symbols (transcribed by VGC), veteran journalist Colin Moriarty said: "I brought this up a few weeks ago on the show, but Dead Island 2 looks like it's going to be re-revealed."

He continued: ""I have heard from a source that I trust that the game may be fully revealed sometime this summer and released maybe shortly after that, maybe September or October at the soonest."

Moriarty is the latest journalist to cite sources who have told them that Dead Island 2 is on the way. Industry insider Tom Henderson also claimed in February that Dead Island 2 is still in active development at Dambuster Studios and could be re-revealed this year.

Publisher Deep Silver's parent company Embracer Group also hinted during an earnings presentation that the game was still in development and may release during the company's next fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2023.

During a Q&A session in which the game was mentioned, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors responded: "I can't talk about Dead Island 2 because it's not announced as such from the publisher.

"But we have just talked about [that] we have one unannounced AAA title… that you think is Dead Island 2, so it's hard for me to comment further on that.

"But I am excited about unannounced titles," he added with a laugh.

Those were sorely missed in Dying Light 2.

This looks pretty damn good I think.

Now that does look fun, I'm actually surprised by that! The gore system, paired with the ragdoll physics are pretty glorious I have to say. The game is on my radar now!

It's been in the oven so long it's hard to see this turning out well, but if it gets decent reviews from D pad I'll check it out down the line at a decent price

Dead Island and Dying light both kind of merge into the same game for me. If I remember correctly the game was pretty fun but really got good once you got all kinds of upgrades on your character.

Looks decent, lets see if its a buggy mess or not.

Not sure how I feel about it not being open world anymore tbh. Maybe having a bunch of tiny areas instead will be better? Gotta wait and see.
