Dark Souls 3's PC servers have finally been brought back online, seven months after being deactivated due to a potentially serious security issue.

The PvP servers for the PC versions of Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 were deactivated in January following the discovery of a severe remote code execution vulnerability, which was said to allow abusers to take control of other players' computers.

In May, Bandai Namco confirmed plans to restore the servers but provided no timeframe for when this might happen.

Last month, Dark Souls, Elden Ring and Tekken publisher Bandai Namco confirmed claims that its servers had been hacked and confidential information had been acquired.

Following the ransomware attack, the company said it was investigating the extent of the leaks, which could include customer information, and was strengthening its security measures to prevent recurrence.

7 months wow. A game can really let someone else control your PC?

I can remember back in the day a windows 98/XP thing we're it would auto shut down your computer in 60 seconds if you were online. Think it took a week or so to fix.

It will actually be quite good in a way, as everyone will artificially be back and getting more invasions and match ups than they would under normal circumstances.

Problems with ER's balancing has also encouraged this even more, people have started jumping back and remembering that it wasn't all OP Bleed procs once upon a time. Who knows how long it will last, but you're right that going away made everyone miss it more than if it never went away. I've already seen YouTube videos from the return to DS3.

I'm more of an offline player in Souls, but despite ER's advances there's several things that were lost from DS3: invading anyone that is embered, purple summons, and the various clans/groups that you could align with.

Wasn't that promised in ER too? I forget that they turned out to be, but they were mostly worthless.
There's items to be called to help if someone gets invaded and there's the usual group dedicated to invasion, but that's about it. 3 had area specific defence groups and all sorts, so it's definitely a step backwards.

I distinctly remember them talking about factions or something.

Doesn't this fall under false advertising or something related at this point? People payed for a game with offline and online content.

To be honest, I can't imagine there are that many people who are playing online PTDE without some of the mods that use their own online system.

However, given how little they did to "Remaster" DS1, it's surprising that there may actually be different enough changes. Maybe they just don't want to, given that you can't even buy it.
