You guys need to play more games

I played a lot of games back then but looking back theres only a few titles I would go back and play again.

To go on a mini rant, I kind of think that having long lists of top games/movies/albums etc for a year doesn't make sense. There's top 50 albums of the year lists every year. 50 albums seems silly, that's basically an album a week. How are you going to listen and take in an album every week for the year? How many of those albums are going to be in your rotation going forward? Same thing with the Oscars, when the best picture category was 4-5 movies, it felt like you could actually watch all the films and they would all be pretty strong. Now it's 10+ films a year and some of them you wonder why it got nominated for best picture. I feel it's the same thing with gaming. I'll play a lot of titles in any given year but at the end I feel there's only a few that I'll mention that stand out from everything else.

Here's my top 100 albums of 2020...

You can make top 50 albums for every year from 50s to 70s and they will all sound great today and have historic significance. Modern albums though? Loads of crap mostly, serving split niche audiences. With gaming I think it's similar. Late 80s to early 2010 are formative years where all important games were made. Right now we have tons of indies imitating old games, remasters of same old games and a dying AAA industry. We are revisiting these games constantly one way or the other, might as well rate them.

Killer 7 shattered my 14 year old mind in 2005. Maybe the first surreal work of art I'd ever been exposed to. I bought that and RE4 at launch. It was quite the experience as a GameCube devotee

Resident Evil 4
Civilization 4
Jade Empire
God of War
F.E.A.R
Psychonauts
Age of Empires 3

Resident Evil 4 - Perfection
Civilization 4 - One more turn.
Jade Empire needs a remaster and a sequel and or a amazing spiritual successor. Incredible for what it was, and a full realized version would have beaten out Resident Evil 4 as the generational game. Alas just a footnote before Biowares downfall.
God of War - Brutal and action packed, yet still different from its sequels.
F.E.A.R - Jump scares done right. Story is pretty messed up but good. Heard the expansions are way better than the actual sequels.
Psychonauts - Some of the most mind bending levels ever put into a game.
Age of Empires 3 is better then at first glance with hindsight though it still had the gigantic boots of 2 to fill. I've avoided the "modernized" remaster.

I feel like there's a theme in there. Wouldn't hurt to try some other genres ;)

Hey, don't just call it all Metal, it's Black Metal, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Doom Metal, Power Metal, Grindcore, Goregrind, Post-Metal, Folk Metal, Avant Garde Metal, Dark Ambient, Progressive Metal, Gothic Metal, Sludge Metal as well as sub-genres of those... like within Doom you'll get Death Doom Metal, Funeral Doom Metal and Traditional Doom Metal.

@Explosive Zombie

Eternity of Shaog really is such an underrated banger of an album. Probably right up there on my top 5 "new classic" metal albums of recent memory

Like that, and...

Endless Wound by Black Curse
The Outer Ones by Revocation
Hidden History of the Human Race by Blood Incantation
Inevitability by Morgue Supplier

Just those albums which smack you upside the head immediately and you know you're in for a treat.

So much great modern stuff these days, man. Shit shreds.

Will never cease to amaze me how so many non-metalheads conflate the subgenres as badly as they do. Or labelling it all as "screamo" 😂

I'd just like to add Civilization 4 to my list, despite not having played it. But I feel it deserves a spot for giving us the most AWESOME opening song I've heard in a videogame.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Shadow of the Colossus
God of War
Resident Evil 4
