Double review!
Dead Space Remake
vs
The Callisto Protocol
Story and characters
Both are very similar in many aspects. Alien thing mutating people into monsters, people in power using miners/workers/prisoners to experiment on them, to achieve some higher cultist vision about the next step in the evolution of human kind. Both use humans as a basis for the mutation design, Callisto leans more into the human shape while Dead Space offers more abstract enemy designs.
Dead Space leans more into the religious theme, but reveals the reason and what happened rather early with some twists towards the end, while Callisto keeps the mystery up for way longer and you discover it step by step. Overall, I actually like the story of Callisto a little bit more, because the presentation is more believable with the great character models and the better suspense curve. Dead Space has the better finale though, with a better escalation and some surprises.
Character and world wise, Callisto Protocol really shits the bed because I've seen no diversity in sexual identities and no focus on inclusion and equity. Which is a shame, there is really no reason at all to not make this new IP as inclusive as possible. Dead Space on the other hand shines in that regard with very important changes to the characters compared to the original, highlighting their sexualities. Right from the start, your female crew mate states that she's a Lesbian, we have All Gender Restrooms, audio and text logs about gay/lesbian couples. Also, we have a lot of black women of color working on the Ishimura. This is how you make important improvements in a remake. Sure, Callisto features a female Asian character, but we don't even learn about her sexuality. Not even the main character reveals his gender or sexual orientation. Making it difficult to relate to him. Clear victory for Dead Space.
Seriously though, both games aren't exactly character studies. Regarding the protagonists, Jacob from Callisto is the better one in my opinion. Yeah he's kinda bland, but the character model and facial animations are worlds better, his little dialogue fits the character and he's pretty badass. Isaac looks like a retard and some of his lines threw me off. Supporting cast is a draw for me. In Callisto, the good acting and the visuals do the heavy lifting. Both aren't great regarding their cast though. Dead Space delivers most of the interactions via facetime, while there's more personal interaction with the cast in Callisto.
World and atmosphere
Dead Space's Ishimura is awesome. The devs made it one big space, it feels grounded and you get a nice feeling of the scale and ... space. Very dark, nice bright highlights, VERY foggy, like to ridiculous levels but it's kinda cool. Many of the corridors look the same and can get a bit repetitive. The bigger areas and set pieces are very cool and good looking, oozing with atmosphere. The visuals, sound and the art come together to create an awesome environment. The game makes you backtrack a lot, which is not that great for me regarding gameplay, but enhances the relationship you have with the Ishimura. I wish it had some new areas that you can explore during the side missions, but it's just backtracking and some new small rooms to loot. The AI Intensity Director is very cool and increases the intensity, making the Ishimura feel dynamic and alive.
Callisto has less fog, but still more than enough lol. It's a linear straight forward game, you can't return to previous segments. The ridiculous squeezing and crawling sections that hide the loading are annoying and make back tracking / exploring in a section a pain in the ass. The cost of supporting last gen consoles. It really hurt the experience. Dead Space feels way more fluid, with no real distractions. Callisto feels a bit sluggish and rough in comparison. That said, Callisto has a bigger variety regarding its environments and levels. The prison, research labs, sewerage, the planet surface, the mine etc. are a bit more varied than what Dead Space has to offer. Atmosphere wise, Callisto is fucking amazing, the environments are nuts. Each level has its own theme with certain enemies and a focus on different gameplay mechanics. This one is a draw for me, Callisto fucks it up with the bad tight squeezing spaces but shines with its visual design and atmosphere, while Dead Space also nails the environments while offering less variety.
Both games are atmosphere monsters and incredible in that regard.
Gameplay
Dead Space has very carefully crafted levels, with some puzzles, flying sections, set pieces, great action. It has a really good pace and keeps things interesting basically all the time. Masterful combination of the game mechanics. Weapons and aiming feel very satisfying, enemy variety isn't huge but they are mixed and designed very well. And everything you do feels just so fluid and good, using the different abilities is fun. The AI Intensity Director keeps you on your toes and adds a certain random element, very nice system. You really feel the high level of polish and maturity, taking an already iconic game with very good design, and a talented team improving it. But the game is way too easy on normal difficulty, even on hard it's kind of a joke. Like when you fight a brute, you just freeze his ass, run behind him, attack him, he's dead. At one point I stopped using the Stasis ability to keep it from getting boring. Your weapons and abilities get too powerful too early, and there's very often explosive containers or stuff to impale your enemies around. I didn't die once in this game. The Line Gun with the laser trap for example can take out a horde of enemies on its own. It feels a bit too steamlined overall. The combat is a bit more tense than in Callisto, because you can't let enemies get close, which creates a sense of urgency and fear - which the Stasis ability kinda destroys, sadly. The great feeling and snappy mouse aiming on PC might be a significant factor regarding the difficulty though, it seems like it's being balanced for controller incompetency. In Callisto, enemies always get close, that's the gameplay, which in theory sounds intense. But it makes the enemies less frightening.
Callisto is more straight forward regarding gameplay, with rare very light "puzzles" – meaning you go and pick something up to open a door. The game changes the gameplay focus depending on the level, with dominant enemy types and mechanics, then mixing it together later on. There is a whole level that is focussed on stealth for example. As a whole, way more straight forward than Dead Space. Callisto has more combat mechanics, with a melee system, the already mentioned stealth, shooting and your gravity glove. While being pretty melee heavy at first, once you get all your abilities, it becomes a lot more fun. You can do great combos, like shooting an enemy, then pulling him towards you, melee, quickshot, then throwing him away. There are a lot of environmental elements like spikes or ventilators to throw enemies into. It takes some time to get used to, but once mastered, it's pretty neat. The dodge mechanic itself is pretty barebones and straight forward for example, just like the melee in general. But it all comes together well once you combine all your abilities and it wouldn't work well if it was more complex. Encounters can get pretty challenging and hectic, with the close camera position making it difficult to deal with enemy mobs. Positioning is king, but there is definitely a bit more jank to it compared to Dead Space, a lot of little things that add up. A patch increased the speed of many actions in Callisto, so the game is now better than at launch. The challenge is definitely bigger in Callisto, Dead Space gives you too many too powerful abilities.
Scares and encounter design go to Dead Space, big time. Callisto felt cheap with its scares at times and wasn't really effective. Dead Space does it masterfully. The sound, random elements, the lighting, really good.
Upgrading system in Dead Space is better and more engaging, also better balanced. In Callisto, you struggle a lot with the tiny inventory, with shops being too rare. Weapon crafting and upgrade system is fucked, because you can't put a weapon into a storage. Once crafted, you have it and keep finding ammo, even if the weapon turns out to be shit. Again, Dead Space does this better and lets you put weapons into a storage, has more frequent shops, only gives you ammo for the weapons you carry for the most part. Overall, I actually slightly prefer the more varied combat from Callisto because you can go all out and it's pretty spectacular. Mouse aiming is horrible in the game though, sadly. Dead Space feels better and is really fun as well. Gameplay overall goes to Dead Space, it's just so extremely polished and well executed.
The disparity in polish and design maturity is also evident in the checkpoint and save systems, where Dead Space does a better job with very frequent automatic saves. Then there are the boss fights. Again, big win for Dead Space with nice set pieces and varying gameplay mechanics. Callisto throws the same boss (Two Head) at you three times with the exact same gameplay and the final boss isn't that much fun either.
Visuals and presentation
Talking about the current state after patches for both games dropped. Dead Space had very shitty VRS that couldn't be disabled at launch, causing flickering and muddy textures. Callisto was just a mess, with bad performance and shader compilation stutter, which got fixed. While Dead Space looks very good, this one goes to Callisto, clearly. Asset quality, textures, motion capture, reflections, effects, characters, Callisto is one of the best looking games available. It looks insanely good... on a highend PC, that is. Oh and the gore. Callisto is the undisputed gore king. Only thing that's better in Dead Space: it has more dynamic objects that react to your actions, like crates, more physics happening. Still very limited, but Callisto can feel sterile at times. Sound wise, both a very good, but Dead Space has the meatier sound, with better effects, sense of position and also better use of the sound effects.
Main shortcomings for Dead Space are the oftentimes blocky fog, mediocre texture detail, no RT reflections, less advanced post processing, rather simple character models, some very low res shadows, unconvincing facial expressions, materials and shaders not looking great. Oh and no photo mode in Dead Space, real shame.
Like these shadows, highest settings.
Verdict:
Personally, I enjoyed Callisto a lot despite its flaws. Especially the visuals, atmosphere and combat stuck out to me as its strong points. It does certain things incredibly well and I like the straight forward design. The very frequent loading sections, overall jankier feeling and some rough design choices being negative points. Overall, Dead Space is the better game. It's way more mature in its design, with the different elements coming together in a better way. Shooting limps off of the enemies never gets old and feels incredible.
