Thread: D-Pad Community Reviews and Impressions |OT| The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly
Just about wrapped with The Darkness. I was playing on rpcs3 but it was crashing too much so i'm finishing on Series X.

The Darkness -

I loved walking through the streets of NYC with the grafiti-filled subways. They nailed the atmosphere and Kirk M. Acevedo's New York tough guy accent and Mike Patton's darkness/demon voice is some of the best in voice performances. Not everything is rosy as the WW1 levels haven't aged well. Those levels looked bland and it was easy to get lost if you venture off the path. And while The Darkness weapons were cool some of them made Jackie OP.

Overall the positives outweight the negatives and i think it's worth a look if you're into that era of video games. Fear 1, Condemned 1, Prey. etc.
Don't forget to play Darkness 2. Very underrated.

Resident Evil 3 Remake - PC

After being absolutely in love with RE2 Remake, I had high hopes for this game. RE2 Remake did so much right, I even finished it twice - which I basically never, ever do.

I explored everything and took my time, beat it in under 10h. Honestly, not that much to say here. The game felt rushed and didn't come close to RE2 Remake.

This review will be a quick and short one:

- Jill's DERP FACE was idiotic.
- Unfortunately, the latest patch broke all the mods.
- I prefer playing a continuous story with one character, I didn't like the back and forth between Jill and Carlos that much.
- Nemesis was pretty annoying and not fun. Outside of that one time where he stood outside, looking through the window and didn't know what to do:

residentevil3remakes0uj7s.jpeg

- Carlos smoked too much weed and needed a haircut.
- Weapons lacked impact and weren't fun to use, outside of the Magnum.
- Gore was a bummer. No dismemberment, no blood puddles from dead enemies, reduced ragdolls etc. And in general, rather tame. Didn't feel vicious at all.
- Technical issues like crashes when the engine got very busy.
- Some intense parts.
- Nonsensical story about you being recorded fighting Nemesis but hey, it's RE3 I guess.
- Way faster pace than RE2 Remake, more action oriented.
- Pretty great visuals. The raytracing really added a lot. Some scenes looked spectacular despite being just some small rooms. In motion, the RT elevated the visuals significantly. I even saw an enemy in a reflection, hiding. The reflection of the character model also looked pretty good in many scenes:

Overall still fun with some intense levels. But not as special as RE2 Remake and a bit disappointing, because there was so much potential.

Lost Planet Extreme Condition: Colonies edition on Series X:

I loved this harsh cold world Capcom created. The bosses at the end of each level were all fun and creative to fight.
Except the final boss because he's cheap as fuck. Took me about an hour to finish him.
The game doesn't overstay its welcome and can be easily completed in under 10 hours. For a good chunk of the game you are fighting in Mech to mech/giant monster fights and it feels epic. If you're into Scifi,Mechs and Capcom give the game a try! A gem of the 360 that's fortunately also available on Xbox BC.

Condemned 2: Bloodshot on PS3

I enjoyed my time with this one. The story starts off good but goes off the deep end towards the end when a cult gets involved. Apart from that I really like the melee fighting combat and they added more moves from the original, elemental kills, and combos. There is more shooting in this one than in the original which sucks due to game design(Thomas's alcoholism means he doesn't have a steady shot unless he drinks liquor) and partly due to the game's performance on PS3.

The game offers you perks at the end of each level to make you stronger(perks will automatically be added, so you don't have to do it yourself). The forensic scenses make a return again, but now you a list of different choices to choose from to determine the cause of death or identify someone. The more correct you are the more goes to your perks you earn at the end of the level.

Overall is it a bad game? Not at all. The only cons i can think of are

1. The silly plot towards the end
2. The QTEs for the combos and finishers
3. The poor performance on PS3 which affects the shooting and QTE's. Performance is supposed to be slightly better on 360 apparently so if you want to play I recommend that version.

If you enjoyed the original Condemned you will have fun with this one too. And can be picked up for fairly cheap. :)

Forgive Me Father - PC

This is a retro, horror and comic style shooter that's heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. It features old school core gameplay with modern touches like a progression system or special abilities. You can chose between two characters, the offense oriented journalist or the priest, who has stronger defensive abilities.

Gameplay:
- As mentioned above, there are two characters. I chose the journalist because I prefer an offensive play style. I had to turn off her voice though, as her quips and comments were annoying as hell.
- You get new weapons, unlock new abilities and can level up. Every new level gives you one point to spend on the skills tree.
- The skill tree includes weapon modifications, improvements to your special abilities, health and armor upgrades etc. There are different branches and you have to decide which options to unlock - the other branch gets locked. You have to plan ahead, but you also earn some respec points.
- Gameplay is fast and satisfying, weapons and abilities feel good.
- Upgrades matter and significantly change the behavior of your weapons.
- Combat starts off great! The last third started to lose me though, because it started to get tedious. Wave after wave of increasingly bullet spongy enemies, and enemies that got more and more annoying.
- Later enemies get very fast and mobile, some flying, some zapping around the place, while eating bullets. Didn't like that, wasn't as much fun.
- Boss encounters in general weren't fun for me, I found them to be rather annoying.
- It took me 10hrs to finish the game.

fmfscreenshot2022.071wj9i.jpeg

Level Design:
- Very varied, with good exploration, full of interesting ideas.
- Well hidden secrets. Like, really well hidden in many cases.
- Full of references to other games.
- Really fun level design, with the game escalating more and more. WIth some iconic levels.
- I didn't like the last 3 levels that much though, because it got into some crazy jumping shit and the pacing got weird.

fmfscreenshot2022.06zakxz.jpeg

Visuals:
- I love the visual style, it's beautiful.
- Runs like a dream of course.
- Nice effects and enemy designs.
- Good visual variety.

fmfscreenshot2022.063lk59.jpeg

Summary:
I enjoyed it a lot, the game does so much right. Visuals, level design, gameplay, enemies, combat, atmosphere - simply amazing!..... for 2/3 of the game. The last third takes a dive, with enemies and level design getting pretty annoying for me. It could've ended like 2.5hrs earlier, and would be a better game overall. The game rocks many ideas, but not all of them land.

Still, totally worth playing if you're into retro style shooters!

FEAR Files on Series X

A standalone release on Xbox 360 of the two expansion packs for FEAR 1. Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate. Both expansions are fairly meaty and can be completed in 4-6 hours each. Perseus Mandate leans more into the psychological horror while Extraction Point is more action. FEAR 2 renders these expansion packs as non cannon so you don't have to play them if you don't want to, but if you loved the original game and want more of it you can't go wrong with this.

My only con in particular to the Xbox 360 release was that this title didn't get an FPS boost for Series X while the original did so this title runs at 30 FPS vs 60 FPS of FEAR 1. It's noticeable after recently playing it lol

Just completed Quake 4 on 360. What a fun ride it was! Loved the weapon variety, the environments, and the art style of the game. And the strogg were fun to fight!

The final boss was a little easy if you have the dark matter gun saved up for it.

The only con I had about the game or more so the 360 version was the abysmal performance especially if they were multiple enemies on screen. At times it felt like it would drop to single digits.

"the game" you mean Quake 4? :D

Completed Raze's Hell(OG Xbox) via Xbox 360 BC

I played this game back in 2005 as a kid and wanted to return to this. You play as a beast named Raze who fights back against a cute race called Kewletts who want to "cutetify" and wipe out your race. You get a wide variety of powers to fight them along with a rolling and blade for melee combat. Visually the game looks good for a budget title, but the environments at the beginning and middle of the game look drab and brown. It's not really until you get to the Kewletts world where the visuals really shine and the colors pop.

Don't be fooled by cutesy nature of the game it's hard as fuck. Mostly because the game is really stingy when it comes to ammo at certain points forcing you to melee fight at times but it can get so overwhelming with enemies that there were points I was stuck for hours until I was finally able to progress. And i pretty sure this is a 360 emulation bug, but I wasn't able to select special powerups that were supposed to help you at certain points of the game making it even more difficult to pass.

I don't remember this game being as difficult when i was a kid, but i was also probably a better gamer back then. I think it's worth picking up if you like weird low-key action games and killing cute creatures to bloody bits. :) Just be prepared for a challenge.

That final boss was a bitch to finish

Completed Killzone HD via rpcs3

Definitely not the "Halo killer" it was hyped it to be, but it's a fine and serviceable shooter for the platform. The series didn't really start to hit its stride until Killzone 2 on the PS3. One thing I did like about this game was that you can choose between 4 characters on every level and sometimes the levels play out differently depending on the character you choose giving you some more replayability. Unless you are a hardcore fan of the series and want to play the series to completion this one is not a must-play and I recommend most people to skip this one and start at Killzone 2 instead.

Thanks for the impressions! How are the controls and how do the visuals hold up? I actually never played Killzone 1, but enjoyed the other entries in the series.

It's really showing its age. I think the controls are OK, but the visuals are dated. It's a serviceable shooter for the PS2, but I only recommend completionists playing it.

On Steam

It was better than I expected, really liked it! It's definitely not for everybody as it's extremely tasteless and crazy. Here my quick thoughts on it!

Story and writing
- Totally nuts.
- You are a dude from hells office and Satan calls you to make a pie for him.
- Then you have to collect disgusting ingredients. They are in different worlds and you have to do insane things to get them.
- Satan is hilarious. Especially at the end lol.

hellpiescreenshot202zudl0.jpeg

Gameplay
- It's a jump and run game.
- Really like the movement options. You get good abilities early on, and can then go for upgrades. Swinging around and boosting is a lot of fun and feels very good.
- The great move set allows you to be very mobile and explore the world your way.
- Once you get a hang of it, controls are very good and satisfying.
- A lot to explore and secrets to find.
- You can unlock new horns, that give you new abilities.
- The levels are well designed and large, you definitely have to look at the map for navigation from time to time.
- Each level has its own theme and all are just.... insane, brutal, while being light hearted, but still dark. It's a weird mix.
- You can unlock the most insane costumes for you and your degenerate fat little angel thing.

hellpiescreenshot202gtd33.jpeg

Visuals
- Overall pretty good looking.
- Textures are lacking.
- Art style is great and there are some neat effects like RT reflections.
- Some very weird pop in at certain places.
- Some levels look great like the first one, later levels like the jungle can look rather bland.
- Your fat angel has fat wobble physics.
- The game offers DLSS, which is a good way to get good performance with RT and high resolutions.
- Game looks clean.

hellpiescreenshot20204eot.jpeg

Verdict
I liked it a lot. The game surprised me at many points, gameplay was a lot of fun, it was a wild ride.

Portal RTX

portalwithrtxscreensptih3.jpeg

My first time playing it. Visuals are simple, but thanks to raytracing still very nice. Lighting and reflections are sexy. With my 3080, I ran it pretty well with DLSS Performance and Ultra RT, generally 50+ fps. Gameplay is creative, with a very good balance. It's fun and a bit challenging, but not too much, it has a good flow. Took me around 3 hrs to finish it, taking my time checking out the effects and playing around with the portals. Enjoyed the humor, it has some excellent writing and voice work. Great little package, highly recommended.

I want more small scale games like that!

Warhammer 40,000 Darktide on PC

capsule_616x353.jpg

This will be a short one. It's a 4 player online mission based coop game. Played some missions alone and then with a buddy.

- Visuals are pretty damn nice overall. Some weird short comings like very rough light shafts. But it's still an impressive looking game.
- Atmosphere is great.
- Combat feels good and is fun on a basic level. But can be pretty dumb and tedious at the same time. Especially on lower difficulties. In later missions though, you need to stick together and coordinate well, it gets tough and more fun.
- Mission based gameplay is kinda weird. You basically just rush through the missions as fast as you can. Your team can do some side objectives that give extra points. Killing enemies doesn't give you more experience points or credits. There are no individual stats at the end, you don't see how well you performed - it's all team based. Which fits the setting and game design, but I always like to see my stats.
- There are boxes to loot in the levels. But it's kinda dumb. Everyone is rushing through the mission because that's what the game rewards you for. In the boxes, you can find ammo or materials - but many are empty and the higher the difficulty, the higher the chance of something being in them. Which discourages you from looking for them, because you have to keep up with the team and don't want to fall behind to loot an empty box.
- The gameplay loop is basically, do missions as fast as you can to level up, purchase weapons in the store, level up your character, do more difficult missions that give better rewards for you to level up more.
- I don't like the "rushy" nature of the missions that much tbh.
- Weapons are weird. I keep using the MG XII Lasgun because it's just the best weapon. Then buying versions with higher stats. Pretty boring. You can't upgrade your armor and only purchase melee weapons and guns.
- You unlock character abilities over time.
- The game completely fails to motivate me to keep playing it. I don't have cool attractive things to work for. Usually, I'm a sucker for unlocking cosmetics, weapons and abilities. The cosmetics in this game suck really hard for the most part and there are only very few decent ones.

While kinda cool, I don't know why I should keep playing it. I wanted a bunch of cool stuff, be it weapons or cosmetics, to work for. Nice things to unlock. Nothing there for me. And the gameplay with the mission rush design didn't do it for me.

I'd much rather have this game as a well crafted single player experience.

Oh and while I had no technical issues, my buddy had the game crashing on him like two times per mission.

I was going to ask how your experience with crashes was, but I see you've addressed it at the bottom.

I can guarantee at least like 3 or more crashes across a 2 hour session with friends. Shit is broken, but it is fun and I am so thankful it has a "Reconnect" option when you reboot.

No crashed for me at all, luckily. I was impressed though how fast and easily my buddy was able to re-join the game. Personally, I didn't encounter any issues.

Dead Space Remake
WCCFdeadspaceremake8.jpg

vs

The Callisto Protocol

TheCallistoProtocol_Aufmacher-bb7456d1f4896674.jpg

Story and characters

Both are very similar in many aspects. Alien thing mutating people into monsters, people in power using miners/workers/prisoners to experiment on them, to achieve some higher cultist vision about the next step in the evolution of human kind. Both use humans as a basis for the mutation design, Callisto leans more into the human shape while Dead Space offers more abstract enemy designs.

Dead Space leans more into the religious theme, but reveals the reason and what happened rather early with some twists towards the end, while Callisto keeps the mystery up for way longer and you discover it step by step. Overall, I actually like the story of Callisto a little bit more, because the presentation is more believable with the great character models and the better suspense curve. Dead Space has the better finale though, with a better escalation and some surprises.

Character and world wise, Callisto Protocol really shits the bed because I've seen no diversity in sexual identities and no focus on inclusion and equity. Which is a shame, there is really no reason at all to not make this new IP as inclusive as possible. Dead Space on the other hand shines in that regard with very important changes to the characters compared to the original, highlighting their sexualities. Right from the start, your female crew mate states that she's a Lesbian, we have All Gender Restrooms, audio and text logs about gay/lesbian couples. Also, we have a lot of black women of color working on the Ishimura. This is how you make important improvements in a remake. Sure, Callisto features a female Asian character, but we don't even learn about her sexuality. Not even the main character reveals his gender or sexual orientation. Making it difficult to relate to him. Clear victory for Dead Space.

nova-filepond-Ug6S3u.png

Seriously though, both games aren't exactly character studies. Regarding the protagonists, Jacob from Callisto is the better one in my opinion. Yeah he's kinda bland, but the character model and facial animations are worlds better, his little dialogue fits the character and he's pretty badass. Isaac looks like a retard and some of his lines threw me off. Supporting cast is a draw for me. In Callisto, the good acting and the visuals do the heavy lifting. Both aren't great regarding their cast though. Dead Space delivers most of the interactions via facetime, while there's more personal interaction with the cast in Callisto.

20221204214958_1dxivb.jpg

World and atmosphere

Dead Space's Ishimura is awesome. The devs made it one big space, it feels grounded and you get a nice feeling of the scale and ... space. Very dark, nice bright highlights, VERY foggy, like to ridiculous levels but it's kinda cool. Many of the corridors look the same and can get a bit repetitive. The bigger areas and set pieces are very cool and good looking, oozing with atmosphere. The visuals, sound and the art come together to create an awesome environment. The game makes you backtrack a lot, which is not that great for me regarding gameplay, but enhances the relationship you have with the Ishimura. I wish it had some new areas that you can explore during the side missions, but it's just backtracking and some new small rooms to loot. The AI Intensity Director is very cool and increases the intensity, making the Ishimura feel dynamic and alive.

deadspaceremakescreephi3f.jpeg

Callisto has less fog, but still more than enough lol. It's a linear straight forward game, you can't return to previous segments. The ridiculous squeezing and crawling sections that hide the loading are annoying and make back tracking / exploring in a section a pain in the ass. The cost of supporting last gen consoles. It really hurt the experience. Dead Space feels way more fluid, with no real distractions. Callisto feels a bit sluggish and rough in comparison. That said, Callisto has a bigger variety regarding its environments and levels. The prison, research labs, sewerage, the planet surface, the mine etc. are a bit more varied than what Dead Space has to offer. Atmosphere wise, Callisto is fucking amazing, the environments are nuts. Each level has its own theme with certain enemies and a focus on different gameplay mechanics. This one is a draw for me, Callisto fucks it up with the bad tight squeezing spaces but shines with its visual design and atmosphere, while Dead Space also nails the environments while offering less variety.

20221209103043_1nwfao.jpg

Both games are atmosphere monsters and incredible in that regard.

Gameplay

Dead Space has very carefully crafted levels, with some puzzles, flying sections, set pieces, great action. It has a really good pace and keeps things interesting basically all the time. Masterful combination of the game mechanics. Weapons and aiming feel very satisfying, enemy variety isn't huge but they are mixed and designed very well. And everything you do feels just so fluid and good, using the different abilities is fun. The AI Intensity Director keeps you on your toes and adds a certain random element, very nice system. You really feel the high level of polish and maturity, taking an already iconic game with very good design, and a talented team improving it. But the game is way too easy on normal difficulty, even on hard it's kind of a joke. Like when you fight a brute, you just freeze his ass, run behind him, attack him, he's dead. At one point I stopped using the Stasis ability to keep it from getting boring. Your weapons and abilities get too powerful too early, and there's very often explosive containers or stuff to impale your enemies around. I didn't die once in this game. The Line Gun with the laser trap for example can take out a horde of enemies on its own. It feels a bit too steamlined overall. The combat is a bit more tense than in Callisto, because you can't let enemies get close, which creates a sense of urgency and fear - which the Stasis ability kinda destroys, sadly. The great feeling and snappy mouse aiming on PC might be a significant factor regarding the difficulty though, it seems like it's being balanced for controller incompetency. In Callisto, enemies always get close, that's the gameplay, which in theory sounds intense. But it makes the enemies less frightening.

deadspaceremakescreepkfy2.jpeg

Callisto is more straight forward regarding gameplay, with rare very light "puzzles" – meaning you go and pick something up to open a door. The game changes the gameplay focus depending on the level, with dominant enemy types and mechanics, then mixing it together later on. There is a whole level that is focussed on stealth for example. As a whole, way more straight forward than Dead Space. Callisto has more combat mechanics, with a melee system, the already mentioned stealth, shooting and your gravity glove. While being pretty melee heavy at first, once you get all your abilities, it becomes a lot more fun. You can do great combos, like shooting an enemy, then pulling him towards you, melee, quickshot, then throwing him away. There are a lot of environmental elements like spikes or ventilators to throw enemies into. It takes some time to get used to, but once mastered, it's pretty neat. The dodge mechanic itself is pretty barebones and straight forward for example, just like the melee in general. But it all comes together well once you combine all your abilities and it wouldn't work well if it was more complex. Encounters can get pretty challenging and hectic, with the close camera position making it difficult to deal with enemy mobs. Positioning is king, but there is definitely a bit more jank to it compared to Dead Space, a lot of little things that add up. A patch increased the speed of many actions in Callisto, so the game is now better than at launch. The challenge is definitely bigger in Callisto, Dead Space gives you too many too powerful abilities.

1544020_2022120516501tge7s.png

Scares and encounter design go to Dead Space, big time. Callisto felt cheap with its scares at times and wasn't really effective. Dead Space does it masterfully. The sound, random elements, the lighting, really good.

2023-02-02_00h52_45j4fn2.jpeg

1544020_2022120612212e4fta.png

Upgrading system in Dead Space is better and more engaging, also better balanced. In Callisto, you struggle a lot with the tiny inventory, with shops being too rare. Weapon crafting and upgrade system is fucked, because you can't put a weapon into a storage. Once crafted, you have it and keep finding ammo, even if the weapon turns out to be shit. Again, Dead Space does this better and lets you put weapons into a storage, has more frequent shops, only gives you ammo for the weapons you carry for the most part. Overall, I actually slightly prefer the more varied combat from Callisto because you can go all out and it's pretty spectacular. Mouse aiming is horrible in the game though, sadly. Dead Space feels better and is really fun as well. Gameplay overall goes to Dead Space, it's just so extremely polished and well executed.

The disparity in polish and design maturity is also evident in the checkpoint and save systems, where Dead Space does a better job with very frequent automatic saves. Then there are the boss fights. Again, big win for Dead Space with nice set pieces and varying gameplay mechanics. Callisto throws the same boss (Two Head) at you three times with the exact same gameplay and the final boss isn't that much fun either.

deadspaceremakescreenk6ceq.png

20221209105010_1o0e6h.jpg

Visuals and presentation

Talking about the current state after patches for both games dropped. Dead Space had very shitty VRS that couldn't be disabled at launch, causing flickering and muddy textures. Callisto was just a mess, with bad performance and shader compilation stutter, which got fixed. While Dead Space looks very good, this one goes to Callisto, clearly. Asset quality, textures, motion capture, reflections, effects, characters, Callisto is one of the best looking games available. It looks insanely good... on a highend PC, that is. Oh and the gore. Callisto is the undisputed gore king. Only thing that's better in Dead Space: it has more dynamic objects that react to your actions, like crates, more physics happening. Still very limited, but Callisto can feel sterile at times. Sound wise, both a very good, but Dead Space has the meatier sound, with better effects, sense of position and also better use of the sound effects.

2023-01-29_00h28_42mifsp.jpeg

20221207234217_19menj.jpg

Main shortcomings for Dead Space are the oftentimes blocky fog, mediocre texture detail, no RT reflections, less advanced post processing, rather simple character models, some very low res shadows, unconvincing facial expressions, materials and shaders not looking great. Oh and no photo mode in Dead Space, real shame.

Like these shadows, highest settings.

deadspaceremakescreen6ldnj.jpg

Verdict:

Personally, I enjoyed Callisto a lot despite its flaws. Especially the visuals, atmosphere and combat stuck out to me as its strong points. It does certain things incredibly well and I like the straight forward design. The very frequent loading sections, overall jankier feeling and some rough design choices being negative points. Overall, Dead Space is the better game. It's way more mature in its design, with the different elements coming together in a better way. Shooting limps off of the enemies never gets old and feels incredible.

Dildo review forthcoming?
How does one review a dildo exactly? "It's penis shaped and it goes in the butt or clunge, and you shouldn't use it if you really badly need a shit." - pretty much covers all dildos surely? Also, a trans person reviewing sex toys is presumably limited to review of the butt experience since if there was a vag there isn't now, and if there wasn't the one that's there now isn't a proper clunge. Seems a bit like having a one-legged man reviewing running shoes.

How stupid that is. Not all dildos are the same.

Added a small paragraph about the checkpoints and boas fights in the Callisto vs Dead Space review. Forgot to write that down.

I'll add some quick small reviews of games I played recently:

BallisticNG (PC)
A7A39DD9535764F5F19C4699C05CC13E6339DC8B

Game is ace. It's a Wipeout 1 love letter. Runs and plays like a DREAM, love it. Has a ton of different options to make it look like the PS1 game, or more modern, really deep customization. It's an incredible game, highly recommended.

Dark Light (PC)

2D combat and exploration focussed game with Souls like elements. I had to get used to the controls and combat flow at first, you have many items and abilities at your disposal, had to get a hang of it first. But then it clicked hard, great game. Visually stunning and the animations are beautiful. The game received a big update recently, with a ton of new content and new mechanics. Very good game.

The OT can be found here.

Lonely Mountains: Downhill

I have a great time with it. You drive downhill with you bike, with many shortcuts and options to get the best time. Unlocking new bikes, items and courses. The visuals are very nice, tracks are challenging and fun, controls are very good once you adjusted to the perspective of the game. The game allows you to be creative in some parts and explore different ways to beat the tracks. The DLC is also very good, with nice tracks and challenges. Overall, it's just such a feel good game with addictive gameplay.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun (PC)

2x1_NSwitch_Warhammer40000Boltgun.jpg

- Amazing visual style with awesome environments and atmosphere. Design is on point.
- The gore system rocks. It's physics based, with brains slowly sliding down walls, body parts flying through the air.
- You're a bad ass Ultra Marine and the game captures that nicely.
- Weapons and your attacks feel vicious and powerful. The weapons are all very good.
- Very good movement options to navigate through the environments during combat, the combat areas in general are fun.
- The first half is very strong, the second half has some convoluted level design and can be a bit messy.
- You've seen all enemy types after the first half of the game. Combat remains fun, especially the last couple levels, but it got a bit tiresome for me during the second half.
- Boss fights are intense, but basically always the same. One big enemy with a ton of HP + enemy hordes chasing you. These battles can be very tough, the rest of the game was easier.
- Very well hidden secrets that give you various upgrades in each level. I found most of them, but not all. It's fun to keep an eye on them and hunt for them.
- On PC, there are shader compilation stutters and in general unavoidable stutters. With my 3080 and 8700k with 32GB RAM, I couldn't lock the game to ANY framerate. Even at 1080p with lowest details locked at 30fps, it dropped to 29fps. I ended up playing at 1440p with max details and 120fps, which felt good overall but there were hitches and drops on a somewhat regular basis. Nothing game breaking, but noticeable for me and not great. Especially not for this game, it should run at a flat 144fps tbh. But, it's UE4 magic fuckery.

Overall good game and I enjoyed it a lot, but enemy variety should be better, level design drops in the second half, boss battles can be frustrating, and PC performance isn't great. But they nailed the setting, enemies, weapons and the combat, big time.

You can find the OT here.

Jusant - PC

It's a small indie climbing game. Quick review:

- It's totally chill with great atmosphere
- 5-6h long
- UE5 game with Lumen lighting, looking really good overall. Many low res textures but the art style and the very good lighting come together well.

- Climbing is actually fun, they add mechanics and new elements all the time. Feels good.
- Story is being told by the environment, some short cutscenes, but mostly notes and letters you find in the world.
- There are optional things to find, some are well hidden.
F-QAcD8XIAAY7go

- Some animations are pretty rough and wooden.
- Not a deep game by any means, it's more of an experience.
- Very demanding, I had to use DLSS Balanced to get good fps at 3440x1440p maxed out.

I liked it a lot overall. Short, very good looking, pretty wholesome. After many intense games like Lies of P, I needed this.

Resident Evil 4 Remake - PC

Weird ass game tbh.

Gameplay & Atmosphere
- Love the creepy, dark and bleak atmosphere in the first third.
- Good level design, engaging and fun.
- Combat is as fun as ever, with great PC controls and awesome weapon feel.
- The gore is just great. Shooting off limbs, headshots, the stronger weapons are very satisfying!
ezgif-1-5fa6d08455utfqs.gif

- Motivating resource search, contracts, uprades, collectibles.
- It's extremely "gamey", totally dumb and entertaining. The ridiculous merchant with his set ups, the dialogue, the cheese.
- Feels like a big adventure but at the same time, arcade-y.
- Good enemy variety, many weapons, many locations, good encounter design.
- Mostly straight forward maps, some more open areas, but always fun exploration.
- More straight up action towards the end.
- Substantial length.
- Roundhouse kick!

Visuals & presentation
- Vanilla AA and FSR are so incredibly bad, shimmering all over the place, horrible. DLSS mod saves the game, giving it a really nice and clean image quality.
- Raytracing sucks and I disabled it. Yes, it's so bad that your resident raytracing whore didn't even use it.
- Lighting is surprisingly good in places, some excellent interiors, good textures, overall very good presentation.
- Lighting on the characters is weak sometimes, with glowy faces.
- No really advanced tech used here, but the devs did a very nice job overall, it comes together well.
- Ultra widescreen, hell yeah.
- Smooth and good performance.
- Didn't notice any major bugs, overall well made.

Nit picks
- It's very dumb. Like Ashley opening doors and kicking down latters, Leon saying all the time "you're getting really good at this!", then talking about her being so competent she'd be a good special agent. For kicking down latters.
- I get that it's all B-movie and cliches, but it was a bit lame at points.
- The tone of the game is all over the place with freaking shooting ranges, it's not very coherent.
- Dumb ass characters behaving like dumb asses. Nothing major, it's the charme of the game. Some moments were just a bit too dumb.

Mods
Many mods available for the game, especially a ton of skins. But also weapons and tweaks. I chose this outfit for Ashley:

Summary
Still great fun overall. There's something about this game that simply works. Can't exactly put my finger on it. It's trashy, dumb, but also awesome.
