An image which appears to announce Crysis 4 has appeared online, posted by Crytek China.

The image is still visible at the time of writing on Chinese social media site BiliBili.

"The 'Crysis 4' project is confirmed, opening a new nano battlefield!" translated text reads. "Follow @Crytek_Official, we will continue to update you with the latest news."

It's been nine years since the last numbered Crysis game, Crysis 3, arrived for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. More recently, remastered versions of the original Crysis and its two sequels have released over the past two years - prompting speculation an all-new entry was up next.

Eurogamer has contacted Crytek for comment.

Interesting. I like the games but why not make a different open world graphics spectacle like when they went from Far Cry to Crysis?

There's also the issue of releasing a new Crysis during a GPU shortage.

Mmmmm. Can't wait to see how China perceives US military in futuristic fps. Will our guys honk whenever they jump through the air and hit the ground?

I get that people want to see the shiny new tech thats probably powering this but does anyone really care about Crysis specifically as an IP? I played through all 3 games and I could barely tell you what the story was except for "Squids Invade!"

Huh so this is really happening. Very curious if they will be capable of providing next level visuals like in the "old" days.

Probably targeting consoles, obviously, so I hope it'll be scalable to take advantage of the new totally available cards.

Story was never really the main thing with the Crysis games, though the lore regarding the Ceph was pretty interesting if you took the time to read it in Crysis 3.

The main draw of Crysis is they're sandbox, guerilla warfare shooters. It's essentially this scene from Rambo 2 mixed with the Predator for the entire game.

Crysis is on sale for $4.99 on GOG right now.

I almost forgot I own it on GOG. Now I just need a decent PC to play it on.

After all the shit and drama surrounding the studio and the devs, is there even a chance this will turn out good?
Had this been 2015 era Crytek where they let go a bunch of studios and didn't pay their employees, no.

But after Hunt Showdown became a success and they gauged interest with the Crysis Remasters, I have more hope. I'll hold off true excitement until they actually show off gameplay footage, though. Seems like this game is still in very early development.

I love the original Crysis on PC and it's expansion Warhead - but Crysis 2 & 3 I just never gelled with for some reason. They weren't nearly as impressive as the series OG outing🤷🏻‍♂️

Also for the longest time, I thought it was Jason Statham doing Sykes' voice in Warhead😅
