City Connection will re-release CAVE Interactive-developed shoot 'em up Akai Katana in 2022, the company announced. Platforms were not announced, but the game was shown running on Switch.

The re-release is being handled by a new, shoot 'em up-centric team within City Connection named TAKExOFF, which is led by City Connection planner Takehiro Eda (Chantake) and Zerodiv Fukushima Factory, which is made up of former SPS staff. The same team also handled the December 2021-released Deathsmiles I & II. The "TAKE" in the name comes from "Takehiro," and the "OFF"—or "0FF"—comes from "Zerodiv Fukushima Factory."

Further details were not announced.

It's odd the see a port of the Saturn version instead of the arcade release. The Saturn version was ported by Ving an these guys were absolute fans of Taito. I've played Bubble Symphony, Elevator Action Returns and Metal Black for Saturn, and all of these were perfect ports, loading and some very slight audio compression aside.
But in the case of Layer Section they've manipulated graphics to look less gray than the original on home displays (good in my book) and changed the difficulty (Never understood why one would do that). It's apparently impossible to tune it to arcade levels, either it becomes harder or easier than the original.

Definitely picking this up. I miss my 360 version after my system went bust.

This one is very bullet-helly, like Progear and Deathsmiles. Akai Katana has the more modern style of attracting huge clouds of bullets then bullet-cancelling into a ton of gems that kills your framerate, rinse repeat.

Oh, I got to download this! I loved playing these shooters but I always sucked at them, especially now! Axelay was the only shooter I finished but that was considered one of the easier shooters!

Elevator Action Returns is really good, criminally overlooked game. I played the NES port of the original as a kid and thought it was ok, never had a chance to play EAR until much later. Worth a look for anyone who likes that style of sidescrolling shooter

Cleopatra's Fortune is a solid puzzle game; any fan of Tetris should take a quick look. You can clear lines by filling in all spaces across a row (like in Tetris), but you can also "entomb" spaces to clear out blocks, coffins, and gems. So it basically takes the Tetris situation of "oh dang I have a large gap in my rows, that sucks" and lets you use it to your advantage. The trick is to balance standard line clears with "entomb" clears. Plus it's a Versus puzzle game so it's automatically 10x better with someone on the couch with you, learning the nuances of the game at the same time.

Bought it tonight and I'm so happy to finally own it. Saw it back when in EGM and drooled over it but never had a chance to play it. The fact that the arcade original is also included is icing on the cake. I really miss the 2D sprite animations of that age.
