Thread: Can anyone recommend any non-woke comics?

A Elbereth Gilthoniel

The only question that matters is can I kill it?
I've been reading Manga for some years, but I'd like to read some comics as well, providing someone can recommend something that isn't tainted by massive amounts of SJW cuckery. I'm not interested in superhero stuff either. For reference, I like Berserk, Monster, Vagabond, and Vinland Saga, among others.

Non-superhero, non-woke...that's a tough one. A certain degree of woke is to be expected in the comics industry, but here are some books I own that keep that shit to a minimum. East of West, Black Science, Fables, Low, Mouse Guard. Depending on your tastes hopefully one of those are something you'd enjoy.

Invincible by Robert Kirkman. The first 75 issues are golden. Unfortunately, it does start to get infected with the virus as it goes on, but it's pretty tame compared to some of the pure garbage Marvel is currently producing.

That Amazon cartoon is based on the comic, but it is NOT the same. That is some pure woke shit. Read the comic.

Invincible is a superhero book, but it takes those traditional tropes and takes them in a unique direction. It might have the presentation of a superhero book, but it's a wholly unique experience.

It looks like almost all the comics I own are manga, but I would highly recommend Sweet Tooth on Netflix. It's based on a comic, and that's just about the same thing. The comic might be good too, idk.

I don't see any western comics on my shelf that were particularly exceptionally. But you ever read Jing: King of Bandits? That was pretty cool. There's also a manga series Stan Lee co-created called Ultimo, about these time traveling immortal porcelain robot boys (most of them also being traps) fighting a war across time, as their inventor and the lead villain, based on Stan Lee himself, tests to see whether pure good or pure evil can triumph over the other. I admittedly haven't read much of it, but it's a pretty zany premise.

A Monster Calls has a few illustrations. That almost makes it a comic. I recommend it.

Though he's pretty much a woke liberal himself, Kurt Busiek's run on Dark Horse's Conan series is fantastic. It adapts a number of the original stories by Robert E. Howard while creating new ones that pay homage to him. And artist Cary Nord does a great job at emulating the art style of noted Conan artist Frank Frazetta. Probably the best Conan stories in comicbook form IMO.

And I can recommend a lot of the stuff Alan Moore wrote. But since you specified no superheroes, I can point you to From Hell, Moore's incredible take on the Jack the Ripper murders and probably his best work.

Maybe I missed it but I don't remember wokeness during the initial 100 issues of Spawn. Also older comics might have significantly less or none of such.

As for manga Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is complete and very good stuff.

I've read up to issue 40. Full of woke crap too, although it is good for the most part. Every now and then it just gets stupid AF.
That one 'womyn' saying she was trans threw me off. Maybe I've become desensitized to some of the less than obvious woke stuff happening.

There's a lot more of it, it's sprinkled throughout. It doesn't detract too much but some issues were just eyerollers I skimmed through cause they were just garbo.

Also on that note, you ever notice trans in comics always look like real girls? They never look like the 40 year old men with wigs we see in real life. I wonder why that is.

And the women a lot of the time look like dudes in Marvel comics.

I'll link some of my fav comic arcs from back in the day later on. You're pretty good trying out stuff from before the 2010s most of the time when it comes to western comics i m o.

I have an issue of Kamen America which is manga style US comic on my kindle.
Definitely positively NOT woke, at least what I've read.
At the same time, has the same problems most US manga style comics have - the art is below average imho when compared to manga.

Vox Day started his own comic brand to combat industry wokeness, I don't read any of it myself but I see the art sometimes on his blog posts and it looks decent a lot of the time. Vox is publishing so you know it's as far from woke as you're going to get.

I'm not half as sensitive to woke stuff as you lot are, but when I watched Invincible and they mentioned Ta Nehasi Coates as someone to read I did wonder what the show was going to do. That was the only thing that stood out for me, though.

I loved the show though, so I should read the comics

After Being Blacklisted By Marvel Comics, Joe Bennett Joins Arkhaven Comics

Former Marvel Comics and Immortal Hulk artist Joe Bennett will be providing art duties for two upcoming Arkhaven Comics projects after he was blacklisted by Marvel Comics.

It was reported that Marvel Comics blacklisted the artist earlier in September with Games Radar noting that a Marvel spokesman told them that Bennett would not be working on "any future Marvel projects" and that he had been relieved of his duties for the upcoming Timeless #1.
