If there's two things most friends will note about me IRL, it's that I'm stubborn and nostalgic. I've got a real hard-on for the early 00's, and was a die-hard PCMR chad for the past decade or so. Frankly, I genuinely assumed non-PC players were ignorant for limiting themselves to the far more restrictive ecosystem of consoles. If I was playing anything on a console, it was most likely on my original Xbox (best console ever tbh) or PS2 on a CRT setup I have in my house. My One S has really been a Spotify/Youtube machine for some time now. With that being said, one of my new year's resolutions was to sorta embrace modernity more than I had been in the past few years.
So, legiterally on New Year's Day... I casually drove up to my local Target to buy some light bulbs and BOOM! a Series X in the wild. The only one they had. First time I had actually seen one in a store since the console released, and there was no way this wasn't coming home with me. The Xbox brand gives me the warm fuzzies, there's no denying that. The black and green packaging was calling my name. This thing is technically packing more punch than my RTX 2070/Xeon 12321v3 build... and I quickly made the purchase alongside my light bulbs and politely placed them into the back of my Volkswagen. Not like I was going to be upgrading my PC any time soon anyhow.
As soon as I got it home. I looked at my trusty old TV. My 46" 1080p Sharp Aquos which has just been such a damn trooper for the last decade or so since my older cousin gifted it to me as a hand-me-down back when I managed a Wing Stop, and stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment like a chump.
This thing is awesome. So many inputs. Picture still looks fantastic, and it certainly keeps your room warm in the winter
With that being said... I didn't want to break in my Series X on it. After all, I'm trying new things this year! Let's start off with a bang!
I ran back up to Target and snagged myself a 55" Samsung 4k TV. The AU8000. Never really wanted a 4k display before. Even my PC has two 1440p 144hz 27" bad boys on it. G-Sync rules.
Nevertheless, I went with the Samsung as it was bigger than my current TV I loved for years, had a better picture than my current TV, and I trust the brand overall. That's all I needed tbh. Into the back of my Volkswagen it went. Drove home, and placed my old TV in my bedroom alongside my Xbox One S, and hooked up my new gear in their old place.
Enter two weeks later. Me making this post. I absolutely adore the what the Series X is packing. The backwards compatibility alongside Game Pass have somehow completely drawn all the attention away from my formerly beloved PC and CRT setup. I work long shifts, and rather than jumping on the PC first thing after work, my go to every day move is to turn on my Series X and television. I'm spending more time in my den than ever before.Watching NHL and SupTV like I used to on my PC? I don't do it in my home office any longer. Just open up the Microsoft Edge browser on the Series X and boom. I even hooked up my little HTPC keyboard/mouse thing and can type and browse as if it were a PC.
I've purchased the Razer Kaira Pro headset and that 1tb expansion card as well. Even more fun - my 360 and Xbox One games are getting a new life of their own too. It's so cool to have the ability to play something on my new setup in my den, and then in my bedroom before I fall asleep as well. So much so, that I'm actually rebuying Xbox One copies of games I enjoy on Steam just so I can have this shared experience between my two Xboxes. Seriously, you guys haven't lived until you've practiced Tekken combos in bed with a fight stick - thank goodness the Series X works natively with my Xbox One accessories. I feel like this is the good life.
I know MS just discontinued production of the Xbox One, but I hope they don't stop supporting it any time soon. Between that and my Series X, they truly complement one another so well. Feels like Microsoft is targeting me as a gamer. Heck, I've not even explored all that PC Game Pass has to offer. That's gonna be a whole 'nother third pillar here. Remember when Nintendo promised us this with the GCN/DS/GBA? Xbox is actually doing it.
Me right now:
TLDR;
- bought a Series X and 4k TV
- One S and 1080p TV are now in bedroom
- now using Series X for the games I'd typically play on PC
- watching hockey and movie streams on Series X rather than PC
- using my One S more than ever as a result too since it also plays a lot of the same games that interest me
- my physical OG Xbox and Xbox 360 games are also getting thrown into the mix
- my PC sorta just sits there now until I hopped onto it to make this thread
Thank you for reading my thread and I hope you all have very nice weekends.
