Bungie has announced that it's developing a new Marathon game.

The latest entry in the science fiction shooter series was revealed with a trailer at the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday, which is viewable below.

The studio's first completely new project in over a decade is currently in development for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC with full cross-play and cross-save.

"A sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, Marathon will find players engaging one another as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners, exploring a lost colony on the planet of Tau Ceti IV in search of riches, fame, and infamy," Bungie editorial lead Brian Ekberg wrote on the PlayStation Blog.

Bungie, which was acquired by Sony last year for $3.6 billion, released three Marathon titles in the 1990s before later going on to create Halo and Destiny, among other series.

"We have a tremendous amount of respect for the original Marathon games and, from the very start, we've wanted to honor that, especially the mythology, story, and themes of the world," said game director Christopher Barrett.

"At the same time, our vision for this game is something new. It's not a direct sequel to the originals, but something that certainly belongs in the same universe and that feels like a Bungie game.

"Finding those opportunities to nod to the universe's lore, while also getting to build something different and new has been one of the best parts of developing this game so far."

Marathon general manager Scott Taylor said: "There's still a lot of work to do before launch or even before we're ready to talk about the game in more detail. The team is hard at work, and we've got a great base to start from but there is still so much more to do, including continuing to grow our team.

"That's one of the most challenging parts of game development: hiring when everything is still under wraps. Now that we're announced, I'm excited because we can be much more candid about the positions we are looking for and talk more openly to candidates about the work that's going on and our vision for the game."

He added: "I know that fans are interested in learning more about Marathon. Believe me we can't wait to show you more. And while I can't give a timeline on when that information will be coming what I can say is this: The next time you hear from us about Marathon, we'll be able to show you the gameplay and will be much closer to launch."

Well I sure as fuck didnt see this one coming. A Marathon reboot? Seriously Marathon?!?

Is this the game Sony saw and had loads of internal buzz? Don't see anything special myself, but I'm old and jaded lol.

Weird...

They spend all this time and money developing the Destiny universe and decide to go back to an IP from 30 years ago that also is just a sci-fi shooter?

every publisher is trying to milk any/every old franchise, even the smaller ones with any whiff of a fanbase. I think the strategy nowadays is something like going for the "retro" crowd as well as the younger FOMO crowd with these IP revivals and sequels. No long-term strategy other than the monetization.

Still Bungie makes 100-500m revenue per year on average, and then subtracts all expenses. Sony paid 3 billion 🙈

I'm certain Jim and the boys don't give a shit if Sony goes bankrupt in 10 years time, as long as he can inform his bosses that they can pay out increasing dividends to their shareholders for the 9 years up until that point, and they have their golden parachutes.

To me it seems like it was a panicked move to try and gain bargaining power over Microsoft. "You take away Call of Duty, we will take away Destiny".

Either way both these companies paid well-well over the odds. It pains me how that money could of been better spent with tactical studio acquisitions or better yet developing more of their own studios.

I have to say I liked the retro graphics look. Game me some real, Designers Republic vibes. Will never play it though.

I agree, they definitely have the romance of retro-computer noises and a color palette that looks like a dystopian 80's Neon light exploded everywhere. A new science fiction FPS from a company where this is their wheelhouse would be pretty kick ass. Hiding it behind a Bungie version of Escape from Tarkov isn't interesting to me in the least.

I suppose the only saving grace is at least the shooting and game-feel will be decent to good.

Halo and Destiny are both great to control and the guns feel good to shoot, so I would hope to see that repeated here.

This idea really just seems like trend chasing though, especially to drag Marathon's good name through the mud. What next, a Pathways into Darkness Battle Royale? Minotaur gacha game?

I liken Bungie to Respawn Entertainment (key members from Infinity Ward). Both have skills to make fun FPS. In Respawn's case they took a big chance using their COD knowledge to bring us Titanfall, where Titanfall 2 was a gem (I wish they would make a third one with another great single player experience), they also throw caution to the wind and prove they can make Action Adventure games like Star Wars:Fallen Order (even if their latest is bogged down by an early release with bad performance issues).

So they have the chops to make any game they put their mind to. I remember when Bungie wasn't only making FPS games like Halo and Destiny, Myth and Oni come to mind, but they do make a highly polished shooter that they continue to balance over a long period of time. Bungie's skills at making impactful and interesting shooting galleries is never in question. I just wish they would make a good old single player game and it seems they don't have any interest in doing that with Marathon. Which should have been a "gimmee" since that was the origin of their FPS development.

Spoilers, it's going to be Halo with a different skin, Destiny is just Halo with loot and a few crappy classes.

All Bungie knows is making Halo.
