'Black Myth: Wukong' Wins 2024 Game Of The Year At Golden Joysticks

The 42nd Golden Joystick Awards has crowned Black Myth: Wukong the Ultimate Game of the Year for 2024, following a supercharged public vote that drew over 12 million ballots across the event's 21 categories.

Black Myth: Wukong, which was among several 2024 GOTY nominees who could count on a strong showing from hugely loyal fanbases, stopped a dominant Final Fantasy VII Rebirth from taking the most awards of the night, while also successfully holding off Astro Bot, Silent Hill 2, and indie darlings Balatro and Animal Well for the biggest award of the night. It also, unsurprisingly, won best visual design.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Helldivers 2 led the evening with four awards each. FFVII shone in the storytelling, soundtrack, and acting categories, with Briana White (Aerith Gainsborough) and Cody Christian (Cloud Strife) securing Best Supporting and Lead Performer awards respectively. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 claimed gold for multiplayer, console GOTY, best game trailer, and the Critics' Choice Award.

Astro Bot didn't leave empty-handed; it took best audio design, while creators Team ASOBI were named Studio of the Year. Fan-favorite Satisfactory snagged PC Game of the Year, while the excellent poker, card-building roguelike Balatro–which I still had hopes to win the biggest award of them all–claimed a brace of trophies via the Best Indie Game and Breakthrough Awards.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree also won Best Game Expansion, which should make it especially hilarious if it wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards on December 12–a nomination Paul Tassi rightly said it doesn't deserve on principle.

Seriously though, what makes this victory so well deserved for Game Science, and in broader sense, China itself, was the sheer humiliation of game journoscum and their Sweet Baby allies. They had the arrogance to say out loud that Journey to the West, one of the four great classical Novels of China, was not 'diverse' enough. Did they actually think their antics would endear them to the Chinese people who revere the novel?

Wow! Totally surprised by this. Congrats to the team! Basically an Indie studio brings out the best in their first game and did it with full AAA quality!

We will see more of this as studios get the hang of Unreal Engine.

I've got 30 hours in the game. The one and only thing I will tell you is the only way this game gets ANY GOTY is because of 'china-bullshit'.

The game is mediocre. Fun but mediocre. If they tried to actually make this consumable for the western audience they easily could've got a serious GOTY contender. For a white male American it's like this game is yelling at me in Chinese about a story I should already know but have no idea WTF is going on or how this relates to anything.

Here's the controversial take......Dragon Age Veilguard despite all this horrific writing is a 3x the game Black Myth Wukong is if we're just talking action game.

No way. But I haven't played dragon. I just can't look at dragon guard and take it seriously. The UI, the over the top LGBQT lighting effects. Why does everything have to glow.
Wukong has spectacle, the bosses are amazing. It's just wow after wow moment.

I suppose I prefer a game that doesn't give you so much choice with the combat. Like sekiro, that's my type of game. I always like to play a game and use as little of the special moveset as possible. I like the vanilla flavour my way through a game. It just feels more raw and skilful to me.

I can't judge dragongward to be fair. It may have decent combat, but that's not the all I want from the game.

I don't disagree with any of your points on Wukong but this game is flat out insulting to the western audience. It's a purely Chinese game with as minimal effort to make it inclusive to the Western audience and to me that's a big problem and definitely not a game I want to support winning awards.

Wukong and Dragon age are perfect parallels. One strives to be 100% loyal to the Chinese audience only and the other caters to too many minorities it literally has no identity at all.

But here's the main point of contention just on the action. Black myths boss fights are bullshit.....this isn't a souls game where the difficulty is legit and can be justified by 'git gud'

There's certain boss fights that go into stages that have completely invisible walls around the boss you can't touch them while they're throwing all sorts of unnecessary shit at you that goes way beyond difficulty and is more of luck if you actually don't get cheesed. On top of that the hit boxes are completely fucking bad on a lot of them.

Wukong is like a hot Chinese chick who has aids. Dragon Age is like a fat transexual who has rich parents.
