Thread: Best Web Browser Extensions?

Just kind of curious about browser extensions people use/find useful, beyond the usual Ad-Blockers and the like?

Being slightly dyslexic I use Grammarly a lot as I find even just the free version helps a lot with picking up on my occasional word blindness.

Savvytime I find handy for figuring out when events are taking place globally and for organising zoom catch-ups with friends overseas at suitable times.

Natural Reader I find ideal as it allows me to listen to articles and the like whilst I'm working.

Anyway, those are a few I use, still always good to find out if people have some gems they find indispensable.

For Firefox I use Reuploader, Bypass Paywalls, Instagram Photo Plus and Web Archives.

On Edge browser I use:
ublock origin for my adblock
NoScript
grammarly
return to youtube dislikes
And a few others :D

The standard ones for me:
uBlock Origin (same as everyone else, absolutely vital)
SponsorBlock (essential for YouTube)
Bitwarden (switched over from Lastpass and I'm happy)

Others:
Dark Reader (dynamically makes everything dark mode, works quite well)
Violentmonkey (https://greasyfork.org/ for scripts)
FastForward (skips link shorteners)
Enhancer for YouTube (not as essential as it once was
Tweak New Twitter (for my occasional browse, it strips away everything I don't want)
Reddit Enhancement Suite

Example ViolentMonkey scripts I use:
Amazon - Price History (inserts links and a graph of price history)
Nexus Mods - Download Fix (skips the "buy premium please" prompt)
Fandom.com - Cleaner Wikis (removes a load of shit from wikia sites)
Fandom Content Width (in addition to above, makes the site better for widescreen monitors)
Soundcloud Download button

Bitwarden. Must have for my work.
Pinned tabs. Saves your pinned tabs.
Bitwarden is so damn good.
Ublock origin.
Twitch emotes extension… I can't remember the name.

I don't use any extensions. I use..... Google Chrome. Never even thought about extensions tbh.

What are the top 5 for me to install?

I've always used some form of mouse gestures add-on. I mainly only use the close tab, back, forward and refresh commands. It's way quicker for me to hold down the right mouse button and do a motion than to hunt for the X or arrows and refresh button.

Your ads must be so targeted, that's wild. You're on about desktop Chrome, right?

1. uBlock Origin is the baseline for pretty much everyone, it uses different lists to stop all manner of things. For example, the Facebook trackers that are shoved into most pages in some way to track you across the web. You can also add manual rules if you want to, like blocking elements on a page. A quick example on Dpad would be removing the copyright bar at the bottom of the page, but I use it for more intrusive/annoying things on commonly used sites.

2. A password manager. Generally a good idea for security anyway, because you shouldn't be reusing passwords if possible. LastPass is a popular one, but I switched to Bitwarden and I'm happier with it. The extension will automatically fill passwords and it can generate new ones for you.

Others can finish the list (or I will later), but these are the essentials.

Not so much an extension but I was checking out Windows powertoys. Some cool stuff in there

^ Like this Enable Mouse Pointer Crosshairs which I've been finding super handy for Photoshop work, or the power rename tool, for

They recently updated some stuff so not sure how up to date this video is, but he shows off some of the features: -

Worth at least checking out. You can install it via the windows store.

uBlock Origin on Brave, Firefox
NoScript (Java Script Blocker) on Brave, Firefox; also makes it easy to see far Adobe, Google, Facebook, Cloudflare have their fingers on basically ever site out there

Firefox Only (perhaps also for Brave, didn't need them at home so far):
Easy image blocker, essentially blocks all pictures by clicking once and reloading the page, for browsing while at work
Down them all and/or Simple Mass Downloader as advanced Download Managers
