Thread: Best Warhammer 40k video games?
Hype Thread

With Cavil's announcement of the Netflix show being in the early stages and the recent release of Darktide (which I cant fucking play since its not on Playstation!) my interest in Warhammer has peaked again. There are a metric shit ton of 40k games out there but which ones are the best? I'm sure there are some hidden gems that are passed over. Here are the ones I know about:

Dawn of War (this game was fucking rad. My first full 3d strategy game. Watching Dreadnoughts grind up infantry units never got old)

Space Marine. Just a dumb fun AA game.

I just recently bought Space Hulk Deathwing on a whim for $15 and its not the best game out there, but now that I've gotten a handle on how its supposed to be played, I am having fun. The game is a bit janky and not many people are playing these days but purging xeno hordes as a hulking Terminator is still a good time. A refined sequel to this game is what Fatshark should have been working on. There is a ton of potential here.

There's several excellent Killteam/skirmish turn based strategy games that are excellent.

If you've hot a Vita or PSP emulation to hand, Squad Command is brilliant.

Or for a more modern take, there's Space Wolf and Mechanicus

The two best games on the market currently, after Darktide, are the FPS Necromunda Hired Gun:

And the comedic side scrolling Shoot-'em-up Blood and Teef:

Next year, we have the CRPG Rogue Trader:

And the long awaited sequel to Space Marine:

If you actually want to start playing the proper game itself, then next year is meant to see the arrival of 10th Edition, which should be a more entry point focused, gameplay systems reset, or the recent release of Horus Heresy 2nd Edition.

Shoutout to the PSP / DS game that @Stilton Disco mentioned. Fun for its time but probably doesn't hold up too well today.

I've been doing a few matches here and there in Battlesector. It's probably overpriced for what it is, but it's a straightforward turn-based, grid-based implementation of the tabletop. I think it could easily have been 10x bigger with three or four armies but after playing several skirmishes and some of the main missions, it feels like it was meant to be a side-project. Still pretty good.

I haven't tried Mechanicus but I've played that action-Diablo game Inquisitor

It's not bad, but it's nothing special. Had some interesting stuff but the missions all feel too short / too low-intensity. But maybe things really pick up later, I dunno.

It's been awhile since I played Dawn of War or Space Marine (PS3) but those were fun too.

I literally replayed Squad Command on my Vita about 2 weeks ago. Still holds up in every way except for graphics.

I have a vita but not currently with me. Is this game available on the Playstation store? I checked the website but I cant find anything online for the Vita store.

Final Liberation, Hired Gun, Dawn of War series, Fire Warrior, Battlesector, Deathwing and Space Hulk 93' are my favorites.

Dawn of War 2 is great, the missions are bite sized and never overstay their welcome and you can play them coop.

Inquisitor Martyr isn't bad but didn't really hold me. I did like the way it focused on distance, positioning, and tactics in way most ARPGs don't.

There was a Deathwatch game on iOS that got ported to PS4 that surprisingly was not bad. It's got a nice gameplay loop where you're constantly collecting space marines and gear.

Dawn of War I & II games as well as Space Marine.

I'm guessing what could possibly reach one of my favorite will be Rogue Trader when it comes out. It's my favorite spin-off and straight out my favorite thing about Warhammer 40,000. I really hope they don't screw that game up.

I'm really enjoying Tacticus on my phone

Fun turn based strategy mobile game
