  • What is Berserk?
Berserk is a long-running dark fantasy manga written and drawn by author Kentaro Miura. The first volume was released in December of 1990 and it's still being released to this day with the 37th volume releasing this December.
Over the years Berserk has received a ton of recognition for its unparalleled art and a story that has fans squirming for the tale to continue after every single release.

  • Yeah, but what's the actual story about?

The story centers around Guts, a lone mercenary going from battle to battle to survive in a harsh world named Midland which is inspired by medieval Europe. Soon enough the leader of an up and coming mercenary group - Band of the Falcon - becomes infatuated with Guts and insists on Guts joining his army to one day conquer Midland.
As the story proceeds it goes to some dark places touching upon several dark and mature themes and thus it would be spoilery to say any more.

  • Alright, how do I get into this?
The obvious answer would be to buy the manga, supporting the author for the work he's put into this over the years and Dark Horse for the great localization.
However, my recommendation would be to watch the 1997 anime first. It beautifully stays true to Berserk's original art style and has one of the greatest soundtracks ever. Guts and Forces never fail to come up when discussing music from anime.
After that you'll definitely want to read the manga. The anime covers volumes 3-12, but it's entirely worth reading them when you go to the manga after watching the anime because of the added depth.

Amazing OP, can't wait for the next release. I honestly feel like Miura might bite the bucket before the series finishes.

I guess I didn't think it was that bad. I find it hard to really NOT like ANYTHING Berserk. Even the (samurai warriors style) game is amazing IMO.

I understand where you're coming from honestly. But looking back at the CG movies they were way better

Especially that the 2016 adaptation looked low budget AF! I like the musou game it was good

I am half way through Berserk. I have been reading the deluxe editions as they come out. It will be around 2.5 years until I am caught up at the rate they release them.

Miura doesn't give a single fuck and we learned to do the same too

I really like it. I just got into reading manga around 2 years ago and it is my favorite one. Vinland Saga is a close second. It is kind of nice getting a giant volume in the mail every 4 months. I usually read the whole thing in 2 days. The deluxe editions just wrapped up the Conviction arc. I've heard the next arc is one of the best.

I'm working through the deluxe editions too. I've seen the 90s anime which was awesome and this is my first time exploring past the golden age arc. Reading volume 6 at the minute with volume 7 on the way. Lovely stuff.

Finished the Berserk 2016 game, while watching the HBO series as a companion was actually pretty fun. Im on my quest to find all the Deluxe Edition Hardcovers now. I like the bigger panels.

Chapters are so few and far between I usually have to re-read the last few chapters to remember what happens.

At this point Miura is better off just doing slightly bigger semi-annual installments ( not ideal and definitely would prefer more frequent chapters ).

Man, I fucking loved the 90's anime. The newer CGI show/movies are okay, I guess. Better than nothing. Kinda heartbreaking we haven't gotten better, tho, because the source material really fucking deserves it. Can I take this opportunity to say, fuck the abundance of shit CGI in modern anime? Because it's fucking awful and distracts/pisses me off every time I see it. 😤

As for the musou game, worth it? I've had my eye on it for years now but just never really got around to it for whatever reason.

Such a shock. Berserk was one of greatest manga I'd ever read, and quite possibly one of the finest examples of the comic medium. Now there's no way it will be ever concluded with Miura-san's passing.

RIP you mad genius of horror fantasy.

This is fucking sad. It kinda hit me even though I only "recently" started with berserk.

I never seen the anime and have no idea what it's about or anything.

The catch?

For some reason, around 4 or 5 years ago I bought Berserk and the Band of the Hawk for PS4.

I'm not even sure why. I might of been drunk or something.

Btw why do the characters, at least in the video game adaption, keep changing appearance? Like the girl looks different all the time. One moment she has long hair and then her hair short and then she's light skinned and then she's dark skinned. Dufuq?
