Thread: ASUS ROG Ally Thread
Question for you PC guys. That external GPU for $799 seems to make it a pretty good 1440p machine when docked as far as I can tell, not as good as a dedicated desktop for the same exact price point, but close. I already have the Ally pre-ordered as my first foray into PC gaming in 20 years, would you consider the Ally and the external GPU a solid machine for $1500 total?

I like the idea of having a decent PC that I can just take with me on the road.

It looks like a pretty good 1440p/some 4k system in that ETA Prime video with the eGPU. It becomes a pricey but powerful Switch.

Here is a review by Retro Game Corps. Goes over this setup pretty thoroughly.

Mine arrived today. Seems great so far.

I've got Steam and Emudeck up and running, as well as the Xbox App.

If nothing else, not having to deal with a Linux backend is a HUGE plus.

How easy is emu deck to get working?

I'd like to have emulations on this thing but I'm not very patient. Do you have any tutorial to share?

There's an Emudeck version for Windows if you subscribe to Emudeck's Patreon. It's a fairly painless install, on par with the Steam Deck install.

Otherwise, since this is a Windows device, you could just install whatever emulators you want individually

In this video we take look at the Z1 ASUS ROG Ally! This is the less expensive Version of the ROG ally coming in with A 6 Core 12 Thread Zen 4 CPU as opposed to the Z1 Extremes 8 Core 16 Thread Version. Is the Z1 Non Extreme Version of the ROG ally Worth $599? We still get the 7" 1080P 120Hz Free-sync Screen and a 40Wh battery but can the Ryzen Z1 APU Keep Up? Let's find out. Also know as the ROG Ally (2023) RC71L RC71L-ALLY.Z1_512

The New Lower Cost Z1 ASUS ROG Ally Is An Awesome Emulation Handheld! It Can Run PS3 at 60FPS using RPCS3, Emulate Nintendo Switch, PS2, PSP, 3DS, Gamecube, Xbox 360 and More! It offers better emulation performance than the steam deck but can it match the Z1 Stream ROG Ally?

At $700, I would expect it to emulate PS3, Wii U, Switch, etc. and do it at 4K... and play most modern games as well.

The "normal" version, which is what I have, can do all of that. Well, at 1080P, although it upscales to 4K if you plug it into a 4K monitor.

I own both the Rog Ally and the Steam Deck. The Ally is absolutely a more powerful, and in many ways, better-designed handheld than the Steam Deck. However, power consumption and battery life are HUGE issues. That's one area where the Steam Deck beats the Ally hands down.

If you had to chose just one handheld of the two which would you keep?

You might want to look into disabling CPU Turbo and installing G Helper ( the app has a easy on/off feature for the CPU Turbo ) to turn off some AC services , I use it and there is barely any loss in performance for most games and reduces power consumption pretty drastically .
All the AC services are really the ones eating battery life and adding to power consumption.
Now your not going to double up run times or anything but it runs much cooler ( not really a issue but good anyway ) and eats less battery.

That's a tough question.

Probably the Ally.

I think the Steam Deck is probably the overall better machine and better buy, especially factoring in the price-to-performance ratio. That said, I much prefer Windows over Linux and find doing anything in the desktop mode of the Steam Deck annoying. If I were a daily Linux user, I'd probably feel differently, but for me Windows just works.

Seeing how insanely good the new Steam Deck is over all and especially how mature and well designed the OS is... I wouldn't ever think of buying anything else tbh.

ASUS recently teased an Upgraded ROG ALLY is coming soon! Called the ROG Ally X, with an Upgraded Battery, Faster Ram, More Storage "2280 M.2 SSD and More!

Will be interested to see how prices shake out for this and the original Z1 Extreme ROG Ally. I'm honestly pretty damn happy with my Odin 2 as far as emulation goes, but I occasionally look over my shoulder at the X86 portables and think about PC games and better emulation.

Those coloured buttons are a mistake IMO. What game is going to use a colour scheme unique to this device.

I still want a good device with dual screen clamshell. A lot of DS/3DS games just don't work right on a single screen.

It's the same color scheme from before, and aren't most ROG Ally owners going to swap out the buttons or place caps on them anyway?

Paying that much money, to swap buttons out and probably void warranty dosn't appeal to me at all. Would prefer it to look fully premium/adult out of the box.

That's why there are button caps... for the people who don't want to open the device to change out buttons.

I'm 100% with you: my black Odin 2 has the most blah buttons ever, and I haven't changed them. It's literally not worth it to me.

So who's going to be following the official reveal event tomorrow for the ROG Ally X??

I think I may just jump on buying this thing. I've been doing a lot of research on the leading PC portables, and it's been between a ROG Ally and a Legion Go. I honestly feel like the ROG Ally is the best in this space.

Personally, I like what the Steam Deck brings to the table, amazing overall package. But the power isn't there yet, hoping for some premium pro version. But ROG continues to make smart improvements and the latest battery upgrade was significant.

Thoughts on this thing for $799?

I've enjoyed playing games on the Odin 2, but with Switch emulation halted and a growing desire for something more PC compatible to play when I can't be glued to my desktop, I'm thinking of making the jump.

I was leaning Sreamdeck OLED a few months ago if I decided to make a jump, but like you pointed out it's SoC is relatively underpowered by modern standards. I'd rather have something more capable and with the software compatibility of Windows. I would reconsider if Steamdeck had a more powerful option.

Specs look great and I think the price is fair tbh. Buuuuuuut no OLED? Having an awesome display is so important.

The display is pretty good. I'm gaming on an Odin 2 with 1080p display and it's not stellar but I still think it looks good. ROG Ally screen is a definite upgrade. Sounds like one of its advantages is a variable refresh rate with the 120 Hz screen.

So I think I'm gonna bite and buy the Ally X later this month or sometime next month. I've decided this is the PC handheld device I want. I think the additional RAM and bigger battery places it in a different category from the ROG Ally and Legion Go.

My only hesitance is wanting to see what sorts of major hardware or system issues there might be at launch. But as I've already gathered all my birthday funds and some extra cash, I'm ready to pounce. I really can't see myself opting for less RAM and less battery even for the bigger screen of the Legion Go, and I don't believe there's any other competitor even close. A Steamdeck OLED is just going to put me on lesser hardware that can't run as much software...

Anyone else considering the Ally X?

I mean, there's nothing I've wanted to play on my steam deck that it can't run. At least in my sake.
