Action RPG Thymesia will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam on August 9, publisher Team17 and developer OverBorder Studio announced. A demo is available now for PC.

Here is an overview of the game, via Team17:

Story

A kingdom once thriving on the power of alchemy enters an age of calamity. After discovering the price behind alchemy, an attempt to stop the use of it backfired. Within a few days, the kingdom was in chaos and the streets infested with monsters.
The key to understanding all of this is in Corvus' hands, but he has lost his memory. The truth can only be found within his memories, but every time he dives back in, he only finds more secrets.
Key Features
  • Harness the Plague – Seize the disease from gruesome bosses and wield them as weapons. Give them a taste of their own medicine. This is the only way to survive this desolate kingdom.
  • Embrace the Raven – Shift into your raven form during battle. Throw your feathers like daggers and execute enemies with the swiftness of a raptor.
  • Fight Your Way – Upgrade and modify your basic movements and plague weapons. Build your very own play-style and prepare for the challenges in your way.
  • Shattered Memories – Recover your memories through adventures. With different choices you've made and items you've collected, you'll get different endings. Stitch together your own truth.

Looks very Soulsborne. Wonder what it'll bring to the table since this genre is getting very crowded nowadays without much to really set the Souls-clones apart. Reminds me of the Monster Hunter craze, when Japanese companies all wanted to try the "MH formula" and no one really did it properly. God Eater, Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Freedom Wars... none of those matched the quality of MH.

Just finished the demo on Steam.

Not really feeling it - which doesn't mean much, couldn't get into Nioh at first for example, then really liked it later. But so far, from the very short demo:

- Visuals aren't great, muddy textures stick out.
- Atmosphere in general is ok but nothing special.
- Running in combination with the camera position/movement feels kinda weird like on rails, hard to describe.
- Good animations.
- Seems to be very linear.
- A LOT of stuff is just copied, with a minimal twist. Like, jeez. A giant tree! Oh a plague! The same kind of text when you die! Come on. Be more creative you fuckers.
- Art design is mediocre.

Most importantly though, combat:
- No stamina management.
- Focus is on the parry, not on the dodging. Dodging works well once, but the delay until you can do the second dodge is long enough to limit its effectiveness. So no wild dodging or rolling like in Souls/Nioh.
- You die very fast.
- You have to learn to parry.
- There are two health bars. You need to deplete one with your normal attacks, to then attack the second, green bar with you green special attack.
- You need to pressure your enemy and cant play too safe, because otherwise the enemy will regenerate.
- The game tries to be fast but methodical, feels like a mix of Sekiro and Bloodborne
- Hit boxes can be weird, especially when dodging. I got hit despite being out of the way multiple times.
- Enemy attacks are readable enough.

A game and its combat often get significantly better once stuff has been unlocked, so I'll wait for the reviews and impressions. So far I'm not impressed.

Edit:
Here you can see the extremely detailed and sharp texture work. The ground, his sword, the armor. No bueno.
