i don't think I ever heard of Anpanman, aside from that I know all of them but that one is a mystery to me. Thanks for sharing op, very interesting.

<3 Hello Kitty
Aye, not heard of that one either.

Surprised Fist of the Nort Star is so big too. I've heard of it obviously, but even online I've never seen anywhere near as many references to it, as I have all those franchises that are apparently less successful.

Yeah, FotNS surprised me too, same with Winnie the Pooh being such a massive brand.

How on earth did Fist of the North Star make $18B in in video games? Methinks someone fucked up their graph.

Edit: Looked it up; they are counting Pachinko gambling machines with branding on them. That'd be like if Vegas had slot machines with Sonic on them, and counted all of the sales from the machines as revenue for the "Sonic the Hedgehog" media franchise.

If loot boxes are counted in video game sales, pachinko machines should too. Gambling is gambling.

I NEED A TAG, GOD DAMNIT!!
Are they adjusting for inflation? The number of Dracula movies and their crossovers over the years ...
Same for Godzilla.

Also, the Jesus franchise, and similar ;)

Some impressive numbers there. Especially for some of those younger IPs.

Does make that Amazon purchase of MGM for $8.5B seem high unless there were some other big IPs than Bond. Cuz if it took half a century and what, 30films to generate $19b in revenue? Either they have ambitious plans or play a very long game.

Pretty wild that Spider-Man on his own is pulling in nearly as much as the entire rest of the MCU
Make sure you are looking at the details. Spider-Man v MCU is not a 1-1 comparison. First its comparing JUST the MCU, so since 2008 (as it states) vs Spider-Man since 1962. And if you look at the box office its 3/1 MCU. Its the SM mech over a 60 year span that puts it above MCU. And I say this as a person who abhors the MCU.

Edit: Also we all looked at the source right?

So Winnie the Pooh because Xi is buying everything he can and burning it?

I mean why is this poop bear so popular?

Clearly we need to take all these franchise, gender/race/sexuality swap them and start swimming in the $$$

I thought hello kitty is 90s shit when I was young. Haven’t seen it since then here in Germany. That’s crazy.

And I’m surprised that Dragonball is still > one piece.

Anpanman is a longtime superhero franchise in Japan.

He's so popular there that even a parody of him was hugely successful. Incidentally, that parody was:

I genuinely have never seen Anpanman before. Not once, in my years of being an on and off Weeb and browsing places full of Japanese oddities.

One Punch Man? Sure that guy is everywhere, and I've seen a lot of discussion about the character and his place in pop culture, yet this is also the first time I've ever heard of his supposedly being a really brazen caricature of Anpanman.

Basically, I'm calling Mandela Effect on this one. Anpanman simply did not exist in the same universe as I did until yesterday.

Anpanman is only really popular in Japan. No one as far as I know has attempted to export him to the West unlike Pokemon or ever Doraemon.

I know we're talking about 100 years here, but Winnie the Pooh? Really? I never would have guessed it would be such a high earning brand.

There's plenty of Japanese only shit I'm into that most people have never heard of.

I try to keep my weebish tendencies on the down low, but they're there, and to such a strong degree, that I am literally ashamed of it.

I really find that hard to believe.
So do I, now I've started looking this shit up and keeping an eye out for references.

That's why I'm calling Mandela Effect on it. This is like someone who's loved French comics for 30 years not knowing Asterix existed.

I think Anpanman is so popular mainly because he's a stable in children material and it's basically as recognized in Japan as Mickey Mouse or something. there's a lot of educational stuff that uses Anpanman too. so there's that also.

Yeah, when you consider all the tankers, pipelines, factories, refineries, rigs both sea and land, trucks, office buildings, around 72 000 employees... it is an insane industry. And their net income is -23 billion $.
