Thread: 2024 Movies Worth Seeing.

It's getting close to the end of the year and I thought it would be useful to have a thread about what movies released this year are actually worth everyone's time. The state of Hollywood is pretty bad these days, but some good stuff still comes out from time to time. I'll start.

The Wild Robot - One of the best DreamWorks movies I've seen.
Transformers One - A good G1 inspired Transformers movie that feels like it was made by people who respect the IP.

The substance was nuts, worth a watch. Deadpool was fine. Speak no evil was quite good. Trap could of been very good but the directors daughter being the spotlight ruined it. Long legs hella over rated. Bettlejuice 2 meh. Salems lot...ok'ish...Joker 2.....yeahhhhh.

I have a monthly cinema pass, and seen about 30 films this year
Most were forgettable

Only saw a few films in the theater this year. Overall a major letdown after 2023 for me.

Deadpool - A lot of fun (if you liked the first two) But not sure it really benefited from the big screen
Twisters - Was alright entertainment. This one did benefit from the big screen.
Inside Out 2 - A waste of time. For every funny line, there are 30 that hurt your brain.

Wasn't in theaters, but the new Beverly Hills Cop was better than I expected.

And IF they release in my area I would like to see Tokyo Cowboy and Broken Rage. But that might not happen til 2025....or never.

I just watched this today. Totally recommend it

Twisters was underwhelming though with some good moments and visuals here and there.

The tornadoes were terrifying, and the film just like Twister shows how absolutely horrifying stronger tornados can be, in some ways even more then the first with how many people
just get sucked into the air and are presumably torn apart or fall to their deaths. Jesus even Twister only had Joe's dad dying in the opening and Jonas ignoring Jo, Bill and his driver. Twisters though I think has a double digit count of onscreen deaths, absolutely brutal.

Twisters music was forgettable country music, in contrast to the score for Twister which still has one of the best soundtracks for any movie.

Off the top of my head here's some stuff I thought was good

Kinds of Kindness
Dune Part Two
Monkey Man
Challengers
Zone Of Interest
Poor Things
The Iron Claw
The Holdovers

Immaculate
The Substance
Strange Darling
Beetlejuice 2
Alien: Romulus

That's my top 5

Oh - Challengers, Love Lies Bleeding, and Dune 2 - duh

Longlegs is my movie of the year. Ignore the whole "scariest movie since Silence of the Lambs" marketing bullshit. It's not that. What it is, is the kind of movie that reminds you of why you like movie in the first place. Masterfully shot with hidden things in plain sight, excellent sound design which triggers cues and clues without you realizing it. It's a long, dread filled, slow burn with some great performances that doesn't end with everything tied into a neat little bow.

Abigail was the biggest surprise of the year, interesting twist on the vampire subgenre that was way more fun that it should have been.

Space Cadet because Emma Roberts

I can only recommend Longlegs so far this year. Don't bother with the trailers, go in cold and if you are a horror fan you should find a captivating movie.

Edit-

Scrap that. I also recommend Abigail. Thought it was 2023 but I was wrong. Good and fun horror movie. Haven't seen a new movie like this one for a long long time.

Shockingly awful year in comparison especially when you consider all the high profile bombs.

Deadpool was fun. Dune 2 is the only movie I'd pick at this point.

I just watched Beekeeper..
The movie is basically John Wick for retards..

Was mind numbingly stupid, worst acting I have seen for a while, yet incredibly entertaining if you are a dude.

The only movies which I personally enjoyed this year are The Substance, Longlegs and Strange Darling.

Been quite a poor year, at least for my tastes.

Though there are a couple of A24 releases coming soon which have piqued my interest (Heretic and Y2K) and Robert Eggers' Nosferatu.

Ok, Dune Part 2 was definite drop compared to part 1 to the point I felt it was a diffrent director/script writer team. SyFy Miniseries still managed to be more faithful to the actual story as it actually had the establishing dinner scene and actually showed Duke Atraides rule on Arrakis before everything goes to shit and also followed the ending and outside very dated visuals is still I think the best adoption.

Entertaining if eye rolling at times:
Alien Romulus

Mediocre if with nice visuals here and there:
Twisters

At some point will likely watch:
Deadpool 3
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Inside Out 2

Maybe:
Abigail

No interest:
Beetlejuice 2 looked terrible from the little I saw.
Ditto Ghostbusters Frozen Empire.

Furiosa wasn't a bad movie, it just never reaches the awesome heights of Fury Road, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think the casting in Furiosa was very good though. Anya Taylor-Joy almost outshines Charlise Theron as Furiosa. Tom Burke was pretty good and Hemsworth completely loses himself in playing Dementus. The vehicle porn is still off the charts and there is one action sequence that can hang with anything in Fury Road so long as you don't mind a little CGI. The cinematography and shots are great too, there are so many moments in Furiosa that feel like I'm staring at a panel from a comic book.

Problem is, Furiosa runs a bit too long (the first hour fucking sucks), and the story doesn't resolve itself in a satisfying way. The movie doesn't end on a high note. I think Critical Drinker's review of Furiosa is incredibly on point. I don't always agree with his takes, but his thoughts on Furiosa are pretty accurate.

and for the record, I don't give a shit whether or not Mel Gibson is in a Mad Max movie. People whine so much about that. Batman isn't in The Penguin and I fucking love that show so far because it's fucking great. I didn't think Patterson as Batman and Jim Gordon as a black dude was a good idea in The Batman, but then I actually watched it and they pulled it off. A good movie is a good movie regardless of who is in it. That said, I'm not delusional, and I realize that Mel Gibson as Max not being in Furiosa probably didn't help it's box office appeal.

I don't know if I would call Twisters mediocre, but I did feel like the movie never really had a climactic, meaningful moment. When the movie came to an end I was like, "That's it?". I didn't think there was anything necessarily wrong with the movie, just that it never really peaked. I do want to watch the original at some point to see how much better it supposedly is.

I watched The Wild Robot again. It's so good. It's a bit of a slow starter, but worth staying with. The second half of the movie is way better than the first half and everything pays off nicely. I'm watching Officer Black Belt right now, it's good so far.

I think I might go and see The Substance tomorrow. i've heard great things about it but I've tried to avoid knowing too much about it.

Reminded me a lot of Frank Henenlotter and Brandon Cronenberg's work.

If you're a body horror guy whatsoever, you're in for a treat. It's wild the movie even got such a wide release. Mubi blessed us with this one

Officer Black Belt is a pretty decent little action drama Korean film. I don't know why wikipedia calls it an action comedy or why they used that stupid cover art. It doesn't have much comedy at all. It's tells a poignant story with some drama and punctuated by some action. This isn't The Raid 2 or John Wick 4 levels of action spectacle, but if you enjoy fights that are a bit more grounded in reality (like that well known fight scene from Daredevil season 1), you'll like the fights in this.

The story revolves around cops and private citizens monitoring sex offenders (mostly against children) along with a few people who have committed violent crimes (like manslaughter) who are on parole. They basically have to make sure these people don't cause trouble again. It's not something you typically see stories revolve around, people committing sex crimes against kids. The movie throws a little shade at the legal system for making it so easy for these criminals to get back out on the streets again and prey on kids again.

Anyway, it has a decent story and solid performances. There's one big action sequence that's fairly memorable too with one particular character really standing out in it.

This isn't a must see movie, but it's fairly enjoyable for what it is. I think it's the first movie by this director and it's not a bad first effort. There's a lot of decent stuff coming out of Korea these days.

Took your advice, the Substance....20 minutes in I was like....this is interesting....30 minutes in I'm like WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUCK.

+ on the Nudity this is highly intriguing

Ok fuck.....watched the Substance last night.......the first hour is fucking brilliant and the second hour feels like a cliche call out to past horror movies like Carrie. The ending felt obvious 20 minutes in but the overall experience kept you engaged.

Feels like it gets a little corny in the end and overall not really a fan of the movie but the first hour was fantastic.

Fun movie

There's a bit too much going on in the ending and it arguably peaks with an awesome and funny action set piece mid movie, but I liked it. Gosling is always a fun lead and in some ways feels like a way better version of Ryan Reynolds. He can play a fun and quirky character without getting annoying the way Ryan Reynolds sometimes gets

This is out on digital now, if you liked Psycho Goreman then it's probably up your alley.
