Thread: The Witcher 4 - Official Reveal Trailer
So apparently, the devs said Ciri completed the trial and mutated into a Witcher. Which is really dumb not only because it breaks the lore, but also because it's totally unnecessary.

She's got them Elder blood and crazy powerful abilities. She doesn't need to be a Witcher in the classical sense, she's powerful enough on her own without needing the potions.

I wonder how many people from the Witcher 3 days are even left at CDPR these days tbh....

IIRC isn't the writer involved with CDP now after they reached an agreement over royalities? Mayhap he had some input on matters.

Never heard of this. I know that they settled their dispute over royalties and a few years later, met and were on friendly terms. I'm not aware of any collaboration.

Good lore breakdown, worth reading:

A good breakdown of the lore from Sapkowski's books. Shit, even Geralt himself said turning Ciri into a Witcher was stupid. Not just because it'd be fatal, but because Destiny has already been laid out for her. It's the reason she and Geralt were drawn together, because he made the mistake of invoking the Law of Surprise to Ciri's parents.

The game has Ciri as the main character because they couldn't stomach the idea of releasing another game with a white man as the main character. They can hide behind lore and story reasons even if they are breaking the lore. But the absolute main reason behind the decision was because they did not want another white man main character. It's as clear as day. Only the gullible are fooled.

You know, I'd be okay with Ciri as a main character going forward. Because in the The Witcher novel cycle, she ostensibly WAS the main protagonist. and Geralt and company just followed along. It's her cursed Elder Blood and the destiny tied to it that drove the plot forward.

But I'm not okay with her being a Witcher, because it's stupid she should subject herself to the Trial when her Elder Blood gives so much power. What's the point?

I don't think that's true. She's the logical next step and tbh, Geralt was getting old IMO. Three huge ass games, makes sense to go with Ciri for the next game.

It would be so difficult to imagine the decision being made organically. Hope you're right but how rare is the female lead decision being made organically in the mind virus era.

It's organic and was always about to happen imo. She became the main character in the books as well, with like five books with her as the main.

On another note, of course fits very well because..... She's bisexual in the books. So, jackpot for CDPR.

I'm going to pass. They'll never surpass witcher 2 as long as these games are open world, esp. with the new dei infusion to the company.
I still think The Witcher 3 is the better game, but the 2nd game in the series is often overlooked which is a shame. It trumps the 3rd game with it's writing and atmosphere. And fuck it, it was at a time when CDPR was still absolutely BASED. It's a shame to see them as they are now.

I just recalled......didn't in Witcher 3 at the end she was made a witcher?
One of the main game endings has Ciri given a new sword by Geralt and she begins travelling with him on the Path. And in one of the Blood and Wine endings where you meet her, she's been travelling alone slaying monsters and chugging potions like a Witcher, which I found stupid.

Pretty much everything is better in tw2, sans the main plot. Even combat. Music and graphics, even. I mean the faces look better in 2 but play witcher 2 at 4k in the forest of flotsam and tell me it doesn't look better.

Frankly witcher 3 is just too big, and I am completely over open worlds. But I still really enjoyed tw3 overall, though I have no desire to replay.

So do I want to play a dei compromised, open world witcher 4? Hellll no lol.

I have faith in CDPR. Witcher 3 was an all timer. I LOVED Cyberpunk. Yeah, they throw a tranny or some gays here and there but it doesn't feel forced. They also created Judy Alvarez....fucking hot. When you meet Panam, you say hello to her beautiful ass.

So, we shall see. Let's hope they don't go down the same DEI shit road like all the others.

If what I've read directly from the source is correct they are absolutely going to ruin everything about the Witcher for wokeness and I fucking HATE to be on that extreme side of things.

Worst thing anybody can do is preorder this game

I don't have any history with the Witcher series, as it rose to fame while I wasn't really playing games, but this trailer looked pretty generic/trendy to me.

Unless the switch 2 can run this I won't be getting it. As I plan on getting a switch 2

Unreal Engine 5 is a bitch tbh. And CDPR are crazy ambitious, I think this will be a Cyberpunk scenario of current gen consoles barely being able to run it, next gen consoles doing well and capable PCs doing fine.

I don't see them being able to scale it down to a Switch 2. Hell, we'll all be lucky if current gen consoles won't melt.

"Exploring sexism"... gonna be a hard pass. I don't play games to be preached at.

Nah, don't worry. This was an organic choice based on the lore. And if they finally drill some lessons about modern day sexism (as they see it) into your head in the process, then that's just icing on the cake! You need to be educated anyway and the only way to do it is to take over your hobby and force you to see it their way.

Well! In that case, I'm all in. Where do I buy the t-shirt?

Yes, this is what I want from my Witcher game. Fighting sexism as Ciri. Looking forward to see how they'll tackle the difficult topics like gender and sexism.

If I recall correctly in this article they ask the guy about sexism and he doesn't comment on it at all. The actual quote talks about racism against non-humans as a theme of the series.

Tbh, the interviewer was leading them quite a bit. There's hope that they'll deal with it in an acceptable way. Yes, they kinda need to acknowledge the gender related issues. Ciri needs to establish herself in this world as a female Witcher, which is an absolute anomaly. A Witcher himself is rare and people are mostly not really welcoming to them, a female Witcher even moreso. I still think there's a chance that we'll have only a few encounters where she'll get a mean comment or someone wants to harass her, and she'll behead them. And that's it. One could interpret their answers in the video that way. They don't say the word "sexism", the interviewer does.

I'm more worried about the actual sex stuff. Canon wise, Ciri is bi. While it was some ridiculous and a bit cringe fun to fuck around with Geralt, I don't want to play a whore. I know that it'll be optional but I know the writing. Just being nice and friendly to a character can suddenly lead to them fucking. I feel like they could feel pressured to make her at least as sexually active as Geralt was, or else the gender Nazis will come after them.

See my post above, the interviewer was leading them towards it. There's hope. Here's the actual quote from the interview:

Naturally, Ciri also promises to bring a fresh perspective to the broadly misogynistic, alternately sensitive and pervy universe of The Witcher, a video game series that once let you collect porno cards for female characters, and still loves to make a spectacle of its nubile sorceresses.

"I mean, I would say the world of The Witcher is a really dark one that's really inspired by, of course, dark fantasy folklore," Weber commented, when asked about the game's portrayal of gender politics and sexism. "But also medieval to early Renaissance history, and that is a world that was tough - tough for many different groups, women among them. As an example, in The Witcher, we also deal a lot with racism when it comes to non-humans, and this is something that we want to keep up with The Witcher 4. I think it's something that has always been really important.

"We make games for adults, and it also means that we tackle some difficult topics," he suggested. "We tackle them in interesting ways. We tackle them without giving easy answers, but often opening difficult questions that players have to answer. And I think some of those questions might be going in this direction as well, because, yeah, Ciri is a woman, and as a witcher in this world, this is an unusual state. So I don't think it's going to be this story everywhere, but since this is a part of this world, and we want to tackle so many of those different themes, it's definitely also going to appear there as well."

What interesting ways did they tackle difficult topics in Witcher 3? That's really what I don't get. Up until very recently video games were just video games. And then suddenly Spider Man is helping a couple homosexuals go to prom.

What's going to happen in the next few years is early access video game reviewers are going to dictate massive waves of sales the moment somebody is honest enough to identify agenda-driven content.

Example I'll give is the reviewer who had somebody steal his content and post the trans scene from Dragon Age early in which they were able to identify it was that user based on main character visuals. Though he wasn't the actual leaker the damage from that leak exposed us all to what DragonAge had and the end result is what it is.

Honest video game journalism is becoming more important than ever

Yeah he was leading him pretty hard, and the title of the article is a massive stretch if not a lie. I think Weber threaded the needle pretty well in their answer. They stayed on topic while not being dismissive of the question, even if it's a rather weird one that doesn't seem too applicable.

They tackled all kinds of topics in Witcher 3, a ton of cool side quests dealing with many different issues. Often very personal conflicts between characters. It was a strength of the game, like the infamous Bloody Baron quest.

Any potential Witcher 3 Remaster should include the major plot lines/retcons from Witcher 2. I don't trust the current or future studio to it well however.
