Thread: HBO The last of US Teaser
Honestly, I've often thought that they turned Ellie into a lesbian with the DLC (despite her tender age) simply in order to avoid having to contend with the idea of her having a boyfriend down the road.

What do you mean?

You basically never have straight women as playable characters in videogames.

That....isn't true. Off the top of my head Lara Croft in the original Tomb Raider series and Mona Sax in Max Payne. There's also a slew of straight female MCs in RPGs. If we're strictly talking Western games theres definitely more females that lean in the gay/bi direction these days.

I was legitimately shocked when the most attractive female player character in Dragon Age was straight only.

Would an hour of straight graphic penis/vaginal penetration balance it out? We're talking "grool dripping from the camera lens" graphic.. Like "burn the boom mic after" levels of authenticity

Man, at this point, I would like to just watch a dumb show without some writer/activist feeling the need to shoehorn their agenda into a script because we need to be indoctrinated….I mean…educated.

I hate that I already go in LOOKING for it. "There's the race swap, there's the white man bad, there's the Trump reference, there's the LGBT shoehorn etc.". I don't want to be like this but the show runners take such glee in doing it on purpose, quality be damned.

So, to answer your question, yes…an hour of straight sex would balance it out. Maybe Ellie and Joel could run into a couple of former Maxim models who decide to fuck their way across the wasteland.

Tonight's episode was legit. They did justice to the best boss fight in the game. Ellie really sold the final scene.

Show will probably be a solid 8.5/10 when it is over. Way to many episodes that have back story unrelated to the two main characters.

I think Craig has become my favorite tv producer. Chernobyl and this is are so damn good. I wonder what he will do after season 2 of the show.

8.5? I've been assured by my Sony Pals it's the most outstanding TV series ever made. 10/10, better than The Wire, The Sopranos, Mad Men & Succession. Druckmann knocked it out of the park (again), and anyone who says otherwise is a bigot and a hater and is going on 'The List'.

What do you mean?

Because they put you in the role of being her surrogate father and fathers generally don't take well to their daughters getting dicked unless they approve of the person in question. You cited TR being a game where they introduced a boyfriend, however, the fan reaction to that was pretty dismal IIRC, which is why they dropped it with the later games.

'She's a lesbian' is like this milquetoast trope at this point in time.

I have to agree with him, whilst I am enjoying the show, it is failing its characters by not allowing that relationship to blossom between our two leads.

This is my biggest complaint, they just don't have enough connection between the main characters in the show to have enough gravity between them for the final episode (if it at all mirrors the end of the game anyway).
Who knows, they may change the end of the first season so it differs from the game, which in my mind would be a big misstep but so many TV watchers can't deal with ambiguous endings anymore so who knows how they'll actually handle it.
None of the other stuff bothers me, the "diversity" and alphabet people stuff doesn't bother me since a lot of the source material already leaned into it, I'm more concerned about them changing too many things for the sake of "the message" ie: leaning further

I think they are going to change the ending in some way.

The game was superior in developing the relationship between Joel and Ellie because you never leave those characters due to the nature of it being a video game. You spend all your time with them and that gives a lot more time for the relationship to develop and grow. You see it happen in smaller increments. This is why the ending works and has so much weight to it. You know who they are and Joel's decision to lie to Ellie is a morally ambiguous betrayal of sorts.

The show wants to pull more time from Joel and Ellie and put it into fleshing the world and other characters. This isn't necessarily wrong, but the ending hinges so much on the relationship that they've developed over the course of the game and there just isnt the same amount as investment in the show.

Agreed that the show is not developing the relationship in the same way the game did. In the episode where she thought Joel was dying, it still felt to me like she was concerned more about being alone than it did the fear of losing Joel himself. The game felt much different at that point.

I will say that Joel's decision to not tell Ellie what happened with the doctors was more out of selfishness but even more so out of not wanting her to carry the weight that she could've saved the world by allowing herself to be killed, which oddly enough she ends up finding out anyway and hating him for. I think at that point Ellie was subconsciously Joel's chance to redeem himself for not being able to save his daughter, and he would've done anything -- literally anything -- to save her, and I totally get that; there have been things I did earlier in my life that I've tried to balance by doing the right thing later on. We all carry the weight of circumstance and bad decision with us for the rest of our lives. It's one of the hardest things about making mistakes when you're young and trying to rectify them as we get older IMO.

Was HBO planning on this being a one off? I mean already at the end of the game at season one? so season 2 is the 2nd one, welp Sony better make part 3 and 4 quickly or else the TV show is going to run out of story.

Is it true that they made the cannibal group Christian zealots for no reason other than to let everyone know how much they hate Christians out there in Pedowood? I'm not a religious person or anything, but that sounds pretty shady. No reason to attach a religion to a group of murderous cannibals just to make it look bad for agenda reasons.

I see where you are coming from but I took it in the show to be more of a tool to help keep order and hope for the group. At least I didnt get the impression that their craziness was a product of their religion especially since it was only the core leadership that even knew they were resorting to cannibalism.

Watched 8. Jeez, I wish they had time to flesh out David and his congregation a bit more. I wonder what they could have cut a few minutes from to make some time? Maybe Kathleen's useless character? Hmmm, I don't know MAYBE THE TWO FUCKING HOURS OF GAY?!!

We don't feel the connection between Joel and Ellie because they haven't shown it....and...the acting is bad. The video game had better acting hands down.

They made David a religious fanatic because, religion bad I guess. They didn't have Joel encounter Ellie in the cabin because she don't need no man's shoulder to cry on. Fuck this show. I'm sick of the pandering to the modern audience and the not so subtle changes to break down the most important aspect between Ellie and Joel, that father and daughter bond. The bond where a father would do ANYTHING to protect their child. That's lost in this show.

So Joel will save Ellie next episode and it won't feel like anything. They devoted more screentime to the relationship between Ellie and her friend in episode 7 than Ellie and Joel in total.

This post here has convinced me not to watch this show, whats the point when the game did it better?

I didn't mind the religious aspect...but flesh it out!! As it stands, and what we know about the show runner's agenda.... unfortunately, it was probably as trivial as religion bad.

I can be overly critical and a grumpy ass face but, yeah man, the game is so much better to me. ESPECIALLY the acting. That really surprised me. Pedro is so wooden and there is zero chemistry between the two.

Wow they're already injecting DLC episodes into the main story? I guess they felt the story was going too long without gay shit on the screen and they had no choice.

They completely wasted two episodes out of the paltry nine on shit that's wasn't even in the main game and wasn't even essential to the plot. They just had to pummel us over the head with their gay agenda.

I mean, whatever, but it only left 7 episodes to cover the story of the game. Which seemingly isn't enough. Nothing has any room to breathe. Especially the winter sequence.

The first game should have been two seasons, or more like 12 episodes rather than the 7 we got.

If they try to cover the second game in 9 episodes they're even more fucked, especially if they spend two full episodes on the trans kid origin story. Which they will.

I read that David was always part of the religious cult and they even recorded voice lines for it but they didn't put it in the game.

So them showing it in the show is more inline with what Neal wanted. Who's knows if this is true as I read it on Twitter.

Where were the rest of the townspeople when the cabin was on fire? You would think they would come to put it out. Maybe I missed something.

I haven't seen it, is it worth watching?

Watched the final episode. It was a spot on copy of the game except for Joel's backstory (Grrrrr). Otherwise, very good.

If they didn't spend two whole episodes on the gay and more on Joel and Ellie's relationship, it would have been pretty damn good. I really am looking forward to how they cast Abby.

Final episode fell flat for me. It didn't translate well to tv and I felt the final events felt much stronger in the game. Could be because I had a much stronger bond between Ellie and Joel.

My wife who is a normie really disliked the ending. She was expecting some zombies to show up.

So if they didn't change anything why did they say it would be divisive?

Sounds like hate marekting hype. Hype of the fan base that they will hate it and its woke to get people hate talking about it to drive engagement. No such thing as bad press amrite.

At least they can kill Joel off and just focus on the gay and trans relationships in the show. If next season isn't a 12 episode long gay/trans sex scene I am never watching the show again even though I didn't watch it this season either...

My dad didn't know the show was based off a game. I am interested to see what people like him think when Joel gets golf clubbed at the start of the next season and it moves forward with the shitty story from Part II.

I dont think the story of 2 is shitty but it definitely isnt as tight or interesting as the first one. The characters also make really dumb really out of character decisions.

I get that its kind of a descent into madness and a long winded ass version of "He who seeks revenge digs two graves" but it always felt unrealistic that so many people who are relatively rational and "normal" would also be so psychotically committed to revenge and have almost no moments of self reflection. There really should have been more "are we the baddies?" moments.

Good question. It MAY be because of Joel's revelation. It went over like a dud because they have 0 chemistry together and no bond. It was like he was telling it to a modern day douche teen who would instantly say something like TMI and ignore him. We just get Ellie's blank potato face staring back. Bleh.

I'm just glad they stuck to the game for the ending.

Something else I've been thinking about; I think the game was much more subtle than the show.

Joel at the beginning of their journey would never admit to Ellie that he wanted to be a singer growing up (in the game). He is even hesitant to talk about it when he does tell her but the player can notice a definitely thawing of his demeanor. Even when he is warming up to Ellie, the walls have been built for so long that he lacks confidence and is even unsure about how to tear them down. He's dipping his toes into being vulnerable.

You dont really get that in the show. He's overall pretty damn cold until they get to Tommy's then he goes into full on dad mode after that.

Hyped for the second season. Pedro is already setting the tone.

Pedro Pascal Is 'Lethally' Protective of His Trans Sister Lux

I'm a semi-famous actor on the rise, and my much younger brother suddenly announced they are trans, and now I get to parade them about publicly for new coverage brownie points. What are the odds? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I presume next year when his much younger sister comes out as a furry, he'll be regularly taking her for a walk in the park? 🤔
