In the latest war of words over its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft's Gaming CEO has claimed that Sony's plan for growth is to "make Xbox smaller."

Phil Spencer made the comments during an interview with the Second Request podcast, where the exec claimed that Sony was the "one major opposer to the [Microsoft Activision] deal"

"Sony is trying to protect its dominance on the console. The way they grow is by making Xbox smaller," Spencer said.

"[Sony] has a very different view of the industry than we do. They don't ship their games day and date on PC, they do not put their games into their subscription when they launch their games."

😐

Obviously Sony doesn't want COD to go exclusive.

But let's be real. There is a stronger likelihood that Xbox eventually kills COD based on their history than Xbox dominates the console market.

Not saying it can't happen. But Xbox has been known killing franchises and studios lately.

COD is huge on PS. I have to imagine it generates a ton of revenue for Sony and that makes it worth fighting over for them. But I also don't think it's all about COD. When MS bought Zenimax for $7.5B, that was a huge unprecedented move in the industry already.

And now for PS there's likely no Fallout, no Elder Scrolls, no Starfield, etc. Then when MS opens their magic checkbook again and says fuck it let's throw 10 times that unprecedented amount at one of the world's biggest videogame publishers and take all that shit away from our one competitor too, Sony has to do something to fight it. Phil is accusing his enemy of that which he is guilty here. They're trying to make Playstation smaller, not the other way around.

No fucking shit Sherlock.

Making yourself bigger while making your competition smaller by offering a better product is what market forces are supposed to ideally look like.

Rather than using their parent companies money, made in other, completely unrelated markets, to simply buy publishers and studios that give your product zero additional benefit, and actually hurt your bottom line in comparison to the identical status quo, purely to artificially make your more popular competitors product worse, they should have instead invested a fraction of that cash creating new studios and new games, thus making their product better than it is now for a fraction of the price of what they have already spent, that offers zero benefits to their existing or potential customers.

For fucks sake, Sony have been utter cunts for years now, screwing over their customers and offering worse and worse value for money. It would not be hard to make Xbox a more attractive option if you just made good bloody games for it instead of wasting billions playing silly buggers to try and sabotage Playstation instead.

No there's not, but anyone following video game sales would know that. However, unlike butthurt Sony claims, it wouldn't be losing CoD's fault. It'd be their own incompetence, following their complete forsakening of the Japanese market. SIE has not understood, ever since Jim Ryan took over, that Japan is important for PlayStation globally. Instead the guy ordered to dissolve Studio Japan and only 3-4 big franchises are still PS-exclusive, all the rest releases on Switch, too. With CoD going to MS and the eventual Switch 2 gobbling up the rest of Japanese games, Sony put themselves in a dire situation.

And yet none of this is anyone but their own fault. Also all their arguments against the acquisition have been fanboy-consolewarrior level. "Switch is for children", wtf, that's the shit you expect from the most braindead console warrior. The acquisition is just and the FTC or CMA blocking it would set a horrible, anti-truth precedent.

False. MS had a good run with the 360 before they shat themselves. Nintendo had this little thing called the wii and something called a swtich that I'm not sure that you've heard of.
PS3 still dominated, especially when it comes to software support. And it was even worse with the Wii: Yeah, Wii sold more than PS3. Who got the games? Sony.

Stop your revisionist history. I'm following video game sales for over 20 years, it's been a big interest of me, and I know what I'm talking about. Sony is the shit stain, MS is the underdog. In the video game industry. If you want to hate any big mega corp, go hate Alphabet, Apple, Embracer, or the Saudi Arabian murderer crownprince. Because they're who Microsoft try to compete with. MS is the good guy in this currently ongoing acquisition business. If they don't get those publishers, someone MUCH worse will get them.

PS3 still dominated? It barely beat the 360 in the final year of their life cycles.

Jesus Christ people.

Have people seriously forgotten when EA bought a few studios and won the bid for the NFL license?

Did everyone memory hole "EA games, buy everything"? and everyone went ape shit?

Now you have a billion dollar company buying every fucking studios under the sun. MS, the company that wants to own and run EVERY fucking device you own. And you have fanboys swooning over this shit. The fuck is wrong with you?

Sony isn't perfect either. They have their own issues, but they just want to be top dog in entertainment. Microsoft, wants to be top dog of your life.

To be fair to @FactsAreDead MS have finished dead last in console sales every generation post OG Xbox.

Probably a big reason their strategy shifted in the past few years is due to the fact they know they can't compete with a box under the television.

Phil crying about the competition being made smaller is a nonsense though, Microsoft and its Xbox division have arguably more potential users than both Sony and Nintendo combined what with their push for PC gamers, cloud, mobile and GP. I find it hard to believe Xbox is being made smaller because of this, especially as competition directly lead to models like Game Pass and cloud gaming coming to fruition as a differentiator to both of Xbox's competitors.

Whilst I'd like to see CoD on GP (save me 60 quid each few years) its removal from Sony's platform would definitely swing the balance in favour of MS.

Microsoft is weird because they're this absolute behemoth of a tech corporation yet everyone I know IRL seems to prefer Apple and Playstation products

This guy has been in charge of overseeing all of Xbox game studios since about 2008. He fucking sucks. I don't get how Xbox fans don't hate this guy. Gears, Halo, Forza all existed before he took over and he was never anywhere close to created anything on that level of relevancy over all these years.

Their most successful products like Windows, Office, Azure are the result of years of bribery and making backdoor deals with governments/enterprise/manufactures. They pretty much failed or have lackluster results every time they tried their hands at costumer-facing products. They are like an IBM that doesn't give up because they have too much money no matter how many times their products get rejected by people and they keep buying stuff that people use (and usually destroying them and making them shitty).

He's starting to cry just like Jim Ryan has been since the acquisition started.

Almost 30 fuckin dev studios and haven't dropped anything of significance since Gears 5. I hope the deal gets blocked but at the same time the sony cult meltdowns over it would be glorious.

Sony charges you to play online and absolutely refuse to make a single mp game. Meanwhile crying over this deal they've been doing the same shit they say ms is going to do lol

They Stole apples window idea for crying out loud.
Their One of the reasons segas not around anymore.
Their latest operating system has become complete trash with the tpm "PrIVAcy" chip and their consoles have nothing of value.

screw both these companies gaming was way better before the 3 console monopoly. Back in the day there were a ton of video game console makers now we only get 3. Screw nintendos monopolistic track record as well. Video game companies should be making consoles not tv some boombox maker.

There's a reason Sony acquired Bungie. Destiny 2 is serious business.

As for Xbox...

Starfield and Stalker 2 are going to both be HUGE deals next year. As will Diablo 4 (which yes, is also coming to PS5)

They've already dropped Forza Horizon 5, Grounded, Psychonauts 2, and Halo Infinite. People can argue over the quality of those games, which is whatever.

Then you've got smaller titles like Pentiment and the upcoming High on Life which completely stole E3 for me 😂

People keep throwing shade at Xbox for their lack of exclusives... which is reasonable, but it's not like PS5 is exactly lighting fires either. Microsoft just has more baggage from last gen. I owned an Xbox One S. They deserve the criticism, and I'm happy to see they're making efforts to correct course. Series X is a beast of a console, and if/when the games finally hit - this will be cemented.

Returnal and Final Fantasy 16 are really the only two PS5 exclusives which give me a gamer boner so far.

I'm just happy to own both consoles, but am very vocal that I'm always rooting for Xbox in the long run.

WTF

This is the opposite of the truth.

Phil Spencer 100% turned around Xbox from losing to becoming a healthy, successful eco system. Xbox has never been better than now. Why are you lying?

Stalker 2 is a timed exclusive too. I want to see what all these studios are doing. Hellblade 2 was shown with the xbox announcement in 2019. We still don't even have an idea of when or if its even coming out.

High on Life looks interesting but again, its another timed exclusive. I want to see actual exclusives, you know the incentives for picking one console over the other.

Halo Infinite was great at launch but incomplete and still lacking content. 343 should be fired imo.

Yea Xbox is lacking exclusives but Sony isn't too far from them either. The Sony cult wasn't talking all that shit when Sony's biggest game in Fall 2021 was fuckin Kena. Sony just has better established their ips, whereas Microsoft has been all over the place with chasing shit like Kinect, then no used games, tv, and now gamepass.

Sony's 1st party output is no better than MS's, they just have Japanese 3rd-party support, which is exactly why the FTC can fuck off with their console warrior-level arguments. Nintendo's 1st-party output is just as shit, what ambitious game have they released in the past years? BotW, Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2 in 2017, then Xenoblade 3 in 2022. In-between only small shit-games.

Anyone with a brain would understand that game development takes time, at least about 5 years, so when did MS acquire all these studios? Exactly. Next year is the start of it. Starfield will be the first. Then probably Avowed. Then Gears of War 6, Perfect Dark, and once TES6 is here, everybody will have shut up. Just because it's not here yet, doesn't mean Phil Spencer hasn't done an amazing job. He has. And it will show soon.

Xbox's biggest exclusive is GamePass. It's just a fantastic service overall.

At the end of the day Xbox is my console of choice. I prefer their controller layout, console UI, and would rather play FPS and WRPG games over many other genres. They seem to be doubling down on that, especially if they can snag Activision/Blizzard.

I'm really waiting to see this generation kick off for both brands tbh. Lord knows I've invested far too much in hardware across all platforms at this point lol

Its definitely my preference this gen so far. But still not going to pretend like everything is perfect right now. I have no attachment to either. Last gen the Ps4 was my preference and 360 the gen before.

This gen has been the weakest imo. We've gotten more pointless remasters than anything else so far. And Gamepass is great, I agree. Definitely don't have to buy as many games as I used to.

Just came to check my emails and found this window still open, and fuck me does all this dick measuring, soulless corporate bollocks and console warring just bore me.

Xbox and Playstation are both shit and have been for years. Nintendo are fucking boring nowadays, likely only not pissing me off as much as the other two because they play everything too damned safe, and barely release anything substantial enough that could invoke my ire.

I've been gaming since the 80's, and I have never before felt such utter contempt for everyone in charge of all of the various consoles, as I do currently. Sod the lot of them.

On a more positive note, Violent Night was a surprisingly good movie with more depth and charm than expected for a movie about Father Christmas fighting mercenaries.

I recommend people go see that, and not give Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo any more money.

Or get a Steam Deck this gen instead, which I'm going to go play on now. Stay fresh cheese bags.

I hope you're right because it's been a long damn time since Microsoft has had anything worthwhile. Give me Gears, a Perfect Dark, or a new Banjo.
